It's true to say that religion fills a void in many people's lives and makes them feel secure. I don't and can't believe in God. What can I do to fill the void in my life which religion would normally fill? I feel alone and without purpose.

Religion doesn't fill any void. Jesus Christ fills the void. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and change your life. Without Jesus we are nothing - alone and without purpose.

Atheists don't usually have the void that theists seem to find so unbearable and need to fill with anything using religion like a filler paste.
I can only assume you used to be a theist and it has left a big hole where the religion used to be and is no longer, don't worry it's only an imaginary hole, it's not there at all and you are just fine.

How do you know religion would fill that void? Maybe you just need to find yourself a date, and figure out what you want to do with your life. Find something that makes you happy and just do it. Who says you need a purpose anyway?? Everyone feels like this from time to time. It's natural. Letting it get control of your life, however, can lead you down a more dangerous path in the long run. People who felt the way you're claiming to were the type to follow Jim Jones and David Koresh.

I am probably in a fairly similar situation as you are, a religious person without a God. After taking a lot of long hard cold dispassionate looks at Christianity, I realized that I never really believed it. The entire concept of a god such as that of the Bible suddenly seemed disgusting and revolting to me. The greatest concept that I can picture of God might be best described as the universe itself - that which just is. I am not theologically learned, just very desiring of peace and enlightenment. Without knowing a lot of details, Buddhism seems to offer the peace and wisdom that I desire. An organization, a church that even an atheist could love, is the Unitarians. Whatever you believe or don't believe, everyone is welcome to find their meaning for their life according to their own beliefs. A Buddhist would be as welcome as as a Christian or an atheist.

Well are you a giving type of person, if so, your time is one of many precious donations almost any organization needs. So if you have time to volunteer you are doing good, you don't have to believe in anything to do that. You may make many good friends, it may surprise you but christians don't ask if you are a christian when you first meat them, the subject seldom comes up except with those among themselves who know they are. Those who are interested are informed of Jesus' life and how we strive to live as he did, not offending anyone, helping and making himself lower than everyone else, to teach us to love one another as you love yourselves.

There is no cure for atheism, unless you decide to study and come to some conclusion on whether you believe or not, but only you can do that. If you don't believe it doesn't make you a bad person, it just makes you honest.

Look into existentialism. Read Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankel. A good place to start your own spiritual journey. Religion is the Opiate of the Masses is a very true statement. I wish I said it first. You may find meaning in your life though other means than a belief in an invisible man that turns people into salt, wrestles, and would send you to hell yet loves you. Capice. Better to find the truth than use religion as a drug or a substitute for meaning.

For me, becoming an atheist filled the void that religion was supposed to -- I'm not constantly looking for god's active presence in my life, I'm not disppointed when I don't recieve any sort of divine comfort through the hard times. I can focus my time on the things that are important to me, instead of wasting my life trying to please someone who isn't really there.

My advice would be to find out what is important to YOU. How do YOU want to spend YOUR life? Figure that out, pursue your goals with the same devotion with which you would have once pursued your religion, and YOU WILL BE HAPPY and SUCCESSFUL. Good luck to you.

I know the cure for atheism. The total absence of theistic belief.

For without theism, atheism could not exist. In fact atheism shouldn't exist at all. It should be a non-issue. Everyone is born without a belief in gods and that is how people should be. Live in REALITY, not Religious Fantasy.

You are not alone. That feeling is an illusion. We are all together in this life even when we act as if we aren't. The purpose for your life is entirely up to you. You have total freedom to decide for yourself to be what you will choose to be, and hopefully you will choose based upon who you are as a person. Who are you? You've already decided that. You just have to realize it and embrace it.

Educate, find a hobby, be altruistic... when you give to others without expectation of reward and pats on the back you start to find yourself happier... IF you can do it that is, but I can tell you religion isn't the only thing on this planet to "fill a void"... there's environmental issues to fight for, human rights, hungry to feed, books to read, videos to watch, real issues to understand and study instead of only buying into the media's versions of issues all the time... shall I go on?
