Do you agree that people read the bible and interpret in different ways therefore to have different meanings? If so then how can people all praise under a particular religion when their could be so many possible interpretations of the text? For example my RE teacher said that the bible said years ago to me not to use contraception as the bible states not too - contraception was not even around then!!!!

Well yes. For things like contraception, they infer things from passages. Like they man who spilled his seed so god struck him dead. They say, see, you are supposed to use your precious seed, no contraception allowed. And that's how we have become a totally backward, bumbass society.

Here are a three important things to consider when studying the scripture.

1. Scripture interprets and defines itself.
2. You need to compare scripture with scripture to get a correct understanding of a particular verse/doctrine.
3. The understanding or conclusion you come to must be in harmony with *everything* else the scripture has to say about that particular topic or else it's possible you have a wrong interpretation.

The way you take the text doesn't matter. The point of FAITH ... is that it's FAITH!!! I do not believe that the bible is necessarily the "one" right book. I think that the bible is great in the aspect that it helps people define their morals, and it gives them something to relate to... As for your contraception comment. Contraception back them was not "the pill" or necessarily a Condom ... it meant to have sex for pleasure as appose to having sex for procreation. Christians believe that sex for pleasure is Wrong but sex for procreation is necessary.

Its the same thing as the area in the book where it talks about Jesus Christ walking on water. The LITERAL latin translation is that he walked on the side of the river (feet in the water). but it is translated by Christians as "HE WALKED ON WATER".

Interpretations are all up to the reader. This doesn't mean that you can't follow the book.

I do not believe the bible is the story of the evolution of God, as fundamentalist believe, where every singe word must be obeyd.

The Bible is the story of the evolution of Man's struggle to understand God.

God doesn't change, only man's understanding changes. That doesn't mean the Bible is not a sacred book (koran or whatever). It is sacred, but it is a work in progress. So read it, take the best and leave the rest.

Yes contraception was around then in many different forms such as a quartered orange inserted like a diaphram or very hot soaks by males as in the Chines culture to kill 80- 90 percent of sperm before intercourse also other gross ways were around even way back.

the reason we have soooo many different denominations is because so many people believe in going by the bible alone and ignore the authoratative teaching of the church (the catholic church/original church.

the bible didnt even exist for the first 300 years of christianity, so certainly God didnt mean for each and every one of us to go by the bible alone when he didnt even provide us with a bible for 300 years.

as for your claim that contraception didnt exist "around then".... nothing could be further from the truth. this is easily confirmed by referencing a first century christian catechism called the "Didache" (also known as "the teaching of the twelve apostles". in this text, taking potions to prevent pregnancies are strictly forbidden.

Therefore, you answered your own question. It's absolutely taken out of context all the time. So, use your head to see what the Lord has for you.. Read the Bible with the attitude that God is speaking directly to you. There is no power greater than your ability to choose. God is , of course, most powerful....but he allows your your personal choice. He steps into our lives only in as much as we ask for . He lovingly gives to our advantage. Not any more .....or less.

Several people attempt to take the Holy Scriptures out of context for various reasons... this is what is called eisegesis (private interpretation) ... as apposed to exegesis (looking at the Scriptures as a whole and using Scripture to interpret Scripture).

Good point on the contraception thing. The name of the game is who is the holy authority. If you clothe yourself in the colors of religion, you can issue cardinal edicts. The nice thing about that is nobody can question you. In the good ol' days, if anybody did question you, you could burn them alive. Kind of gives a whole new meaning to "Gimme that ol' time religion."

The differing interpretations of the same text explains very well why there are differing sects within Christianity just as there are differing sects of Islam.
