Slow down.
You younger folks think time is so important to save. What for? Advertisements? Traffic? The next quarrel?
Try relaxing, and live in slow motion.
48.5 million Seniors cant be wrong.
PLEASE realize that the only empowerment an older person enjoys is the blockage of life at critical junctures and the fast lanes of highways.
One day, you'll be old, and then you'll understand this phenomena completely. Annoying people while acting oblivious to it is one of the most fun ways we cope with arthritis, diabetes, bone spurs, insomnia, loss of sex drive and a host of other physical, emotional, financial and psychological challenges.
We compare notes and boast with laughter at Bridge and Bingo gatherings...sharing the reactions of those we bother. Would you prefer we lose this excitement? I can't believe for a moment that you would.

Being a cashier I always wondered this as well but it just hit me why they would do that.
Perhaps they thought they had enough cash on them for the purchase and realized they did not and wanted to write a check?
I've noticed some also like to watch the items rung up so they can yell at the cashier when the price comes up wrong instead of waiting till after to look at the receipt.

It is usually old ladies that are still stuck in their old world. I had that happen to me today, and worse. When she was done she stood there reviewing her receipt and did not move. I needed to pay for my purchase (with debit card) but she was still there after my 20 some odd items were rung up. She was standing right in front of the card swiper and would not budge even though I asked her nicely if I could get to the card reader. She just grunted and continued reading her receipt and making sure everything was there. It was frustrating to say the least!
I have nothing against the older generations because my parents are her age, but my own parents have caught up with the times! and have enough decency to let others pay for their purchase in a timely manner :-). My parents take their time to review their receipts at the end of the lane, not the center where people need pay, which makes me proud.

Boy! Do I know this feeling. And especially when I am also keeping 2 kids in the cart from killing themselves or me. Not only that, the check-book folks also write down the details in the front of the checkbook, where one writes down details for our own records. And in neat clear cursive cute handwriting.
yes, the 20-30 seconds should technically not bother you. But, it makes my blood boil.
And, about the folks wanting to keep an eye on the total, it is possible to write the pay-to & signature before cashier starts ringing up.
Well, I have made this into my own vent! To answer your question, I don't know why they do that. mabye they are not aware of it.

I hated when people did this when I was working in retail, especially when the store was very busy and my register had a very long line. The people behind the check-writing person would act like as if it was my fault that that person was taking their sweet old time filling out their check.

These are the same people who have twenty items in the 10 items or less and try to pay with a check at the CASH only line. These folks should be killed, and their remains used to decorate the cash register as a warning to other inconsiderate idiots. I have bitched out people in the store for doing this. I also have a problem with people who are too lazy to put the shopping cart in the cart rack. Lazy butts would rather the cart dent someones car than take 30 seconds putting it away. DAMN you hit a button with me on this one. Great question!

Yup. Huge pet peeve of mine. Who the heck still uses checks in retail stores anyway? Its 2007 for goodness sake.
I get especially annoyed when the check writer is a young person. My parents and every 50-75 year old adult I know personally use debit cards at stores. So it's shocking to see a 28 year old mom, break out her check book on line.
You're right. The worst insult to injury is when they pull out the checkbook after the total is given and begin writing then.

Yes, or wait until it's totaled to even pull out their billfold, open their purse, etc.
The answer to why some people still use checks is they are floating checks-buying stuff in the hope the check won't clear until payday or $ comes in. Or old fogies like my dad who don't trust using a debit card (don't ask me why).

Some people like to watch the price on the cashier's screen to make sure that the total is correct, that the cashier did not ring up the total incorrectly, or because they want to make sure that the price listed on the item was correct when it rings up. I know it's a bit annoying to wait, but a little patience never killed anyone.
