With the rise of gas prices, I am thinking of downsizing from my Ford Ranger.

I would like suggestions on what small car has been the most reliable and easiest on the wallet.

BTW, Saturn fans need not reply. I have driven enough of them to know that after 50K or so miles, they simply begin to fall apart.

I would personally recommend any year Toyota Corolla; or if that's a little too small, try the next-up Camry.

I get 30mpg easily in the city in my '92 Corolla. The best mileage I've gotten was over 50mpg, and that was on an isolated road in the woods, cruising at 50-65 mph. I have a standard (manual) transmission on the Corolla. I find that helps alot, too as opposed to having an auto.

And I 100% agree about the Saturns. They are crap. Ford is the best American make, although I can't say thatI'd choose them over many other makes from other countries.

Whatever you do, do a little research elsewhere to see if the car you get will accomodate all of your needs.

I'd suggest Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sentra. They are the easiest on the wallet and two of the more reliable cars sold today.

You may want to check out the annual car issue of Consumer Reports magazine. They tell you the best used cars, expected cost, and the predicted reliability of the ones you are looking at. They have a website you can sign up for to get all the details.

Sad to see you and others have had bad experiences with the Saturn. Of all the GM vehicles, I have enjoyed it the most and had the least amount of problems. I'm at 85,000 miles and counting with only standard maintenance done by the dealer. Biggest expense has been replacement of the wiper assembly that rusted and seized on me. But then again, my 2001 SC1 is handling those northeastern winter storms with all the snow, slush, salt, and sand so I expected them to go sooner rather than later.

Toyota's the way to fly. I'm getting 34 mpg. on trips with our Camry automatic 4 cyl. I also have used Mobil 1 in the crankcase since it was new.
Inside the valve cover every thing's as clean as a hospital operating room. Oil changes are done every 5,000 miles. It's been in the shop once for an anti-knock sensor.
