Which is most likely to be used by a professional? I'm not a professional or anything, but I would like a professional camera.

Professionals use both.
Both are good systems.
Film is good.
Digital is good.
Professionals use both.
Decide which suits your style better.
Handle cameras from both systems to see how they feel.
Either Nikon or Canon will be fine.
Just choose and enjoy!

These days that term don't count.

If you're talking DSLR the big thing is their phiosophy.

Nikon SMOOTHES the image out which lower sharpness on things like text but makes colors more saturated and smooth

Canon SHARPENS the image out which makes for better text, but the colors mottle

Nikon has their own Glass Works and is famous for lenses, but Canon comes in almost neck and neck.

Canon was the first to use Flourite and other exotic glasses in their lenses.

As for the lower end, people seem very satisfied with Canon, but you pay a little more.

No one seems to complain about Nikon.

The LOW end ones are vastly different from the High End (Canon XT, XTI or Nikon D40,D80, etc.)

Neither CANON NOR NIKON is the same company it was in the 1960s and 70s when the made clockworks cameras in Japan.

Today both have mass production plants in China

Back in 1960 Nikon was considered a work horse.

Any press photographer worth his salt bought a Nikon F

That may no longer be true.

Today if you're a true photographer you buy a Leica 35mm or a Hasselblad 6x6

They are still made like clockworks

The digital stuff has problems.

Get and extended warranty if you can.

1 out of 3 digital cameras experiences a breakdown in 2 or 3 years.

They are almost Throw Away.

Depending on the model, Nikons tend to last longer than Canons.

Both produce wonderful results for casual photographers.

If you spend more than $500 for a digital camera, you'll be hard pressed to see any significant difference between film and a quality digital sensor.

The more you spend on 8 to 10 megapixel sensor models, the better the images will look and the larger you'll be able to make the print from it.

My father has about 6 Nikon cameras and he swears by them. I personally have never been fond of a Nikon.

I have a Canon Rebel XTi and I'd die for it. It's a wonderful, easy to use professional camera.

Mine is digital, my father uses film.

It's honestly a matter of opinion.

Both are used by pros. Canon has better firm ware. Nikon has better optics. Digital is better, easier to edit and doesnt cost anything per shot.
