Me and my husband do not have cell phones. We dont because we just dont see the need to spend at least 50 dollars a month per person to have one. We just tell eachother our schedule before we leave in the day and stick to that and show up on time. I think its very funny everyone HAS to have one now adays. What do you think people did before cell phones? If i need to make a call i just find a pay phone. Also sometime people get really mad at me for not having one, i just laugh and give them my home phone. I actually like not being reachable 24/7 sometimes I just dont want to talk to you :) Anyone else in my boat?

I only have a cellphone in my car for emergencies. It's never on and I rarely use it! I also like to be able to be unavailable with a good excuse! Enjoy your privacy!! (Too bad if someone gets mad at you, if they want to reach you so badly, tell them to email you!) :)

I have one but it's turned off almost all the time... I got it because sometimes I like to hike by myself and for emergencies. I use it a few times a year, but last year when my mom was in the hospital I was glad I had it, I did want to be reachable then. However, as soon as she was home, off the cell phone went, and I've since used it a time or two to hook up with a friend at a very large, crowded event and maybe two or three times to call in when the trains had a delay of an hour or more. Those friends who know the number know not to use it except when we're trying to meet somewhere; it won't be on and I don't check voicemail apart from those times. I don't call home or work when the trains are five or ten minutes late; I get there when I get there, they'll manage without me for that long.

I know several people who bought theirs with the same intend, just for emergencies, but who've since become completely dependent on the thing. I'm very glad to say I haven't!

I finally got a cellphone at Christmas time bc my husband has one for work/sales and then he could get me a good deal for another $26.

I, like you, don't like having to be "on call 24/7" to everyone. I informed people to call my house first. Certain gabby friends are encouraged to use the house phone and not run up the cell bills.

It is convenient in case of emergencies. It is also convenient if I am out shopping and have a question about an item, and can phone my daughter or husband to see if they want that item.

All in all, I've adjusted to having it and have less annoyances for people that have them. One thing I find funny is that people, no matter where they are, are constantly checking their phones for messages (such as after a class). You would think they were all dignitaries or something. :)

What about if you have a parent who has very bad health and could literally die at any time? What about if you have a developmentally delayed child with severe behavioral issues at school? Or what if, in your situation, you or your husband got into an accident and the other were in the car without a cell phone and the hospital were frantically trying to call you to no avail because you're not near a phone? How would you feel if you couldn't get to your husband before he died just because you don't feel the need for a cell phone? As far as being unreachable, you can put the ringer on vibe so as not disturb others and cell phones do have caller ID so if you don't want to speak to the caller you don't have to.

My husband and I used to feel the same way you do but I'll tell you that we are very glad that we have cell phones.

I don't carry a phone with me. My husband had the same worries as some others here....breaking down in a rural area which is where we live.

The solution is an old fashioned bag phone in the car. It's never plugged in, but I can do so if I need to make an emergency call. It was added on to my husbands phone line for about $10 a month. It has a stronger signal than hand held models so is more likely to pick up a signal.

I thing I made a call on it last summer one time.......lol.

I just got one a year ago. The only reason I got it was because I was in Texas for my mother's heart surgery. She kept having complications and I purchased one of those that you buy a card for but don't have to sign a contract. I needed a way for the hospital to get in touch with me in case of an emergency. I was staying at my moms apartment which was 56 miles from the hospital. I was on the road a lot every day. I kept it for my 1726 mile drive home when she was better and decided to continue to keep it, since I live in a very rural area and have to drive a ways for everything. I only have it for emergencies. I've had it for a year now and I've only used about 300 minutes. I don't find it necessary to stay glued to the phone 24 hours a day.

I do have a cell phone now; however that still doesn't mean that everyone who knows me has the right to reach me 24/7. I agree with you. I know what you mean about people getting aggravated when you don't have one. They get just as aggravated when you do have one and don't keep it on all the time. I enjoy going to church and doing church activities and I don't have my phone on then. I don't answer while driving. So I am unreachable - big deal. I do not have children so no one needs me all the time.

Cell phones have their place and they are a great invention; however no one HAS to have one.

As far as for people who want you to have one; ask them if they would like to pay for it too.

I have a mobile phone so people can contact me but I don't always take it with me which seems to annoy people! I only take it out if people are going to need to contact me and I actually want to be contacted.

I don't understand why it cost 50 dollars per month to own a phone? Mine cost about 60 pound and that's it I just put credit on it when I need to which isn't very often.

I agree, however I live in a very rural area, and I have to drive an hour, one way, to college and back. There are no pay phones, and the emergency phones are VERY few and VERY far between.

About a month ago my car broke down (Main computer/fuel pump died) and I had absolutely no way to contact ANYONE except with my cellphone.

There are times that cellphones have saved my *** and my family's, plus, it saved my good friend's life.

They're a necessary evil in today's life.

The only reason I have a cell phone is because I often need a ride home from school at unpredictable times.

Once I get my license, I probably won't need it!
