My husband is a big fan of Nascar, and I come from a Nascar loving family. I never took any interest in it until recently, since of course my husband has been subjecting me to it weekly. I think I will take more of an interest in the sport if I had someone to pull for, so I am trying to decide who that should be.
I would like to pull for someone with integrity. Someone who is a good sport, and someone I could respect.
Who do you feel meets this criteria?
Also, who do you pull for and why?

Let's see......You'll want a driver who...
A: has the talent to win a race
B: has the equipment to win a race
C: doesn't piss, moan & whine
D: has plenty of class, integrity, etc.
E: Is going to be around for awhile

Jeez...sounds like Jeff Burton to me.

I have the same reason for watching Nascar as you....except an additional one...a family member is on a Nascar pit crew. BUT that didn't keep me from forming my own opinion of the drivers after three years of watching racing. I think you need to form your own opinion of who you can respect as a driver, a good sport, a good leader...maybe even who might be the sexiest. I think listening to other fans would be a mistake. I love the way "Ice Man" drove and never complained. I detest the way Tony Stewart climbs a fence (what does that have to do with anything?). I hate the way Gordon whines (even today about Jimmie). I think Jimmie Johnson races clean and the fans don't give him enough credit. I KNOW any driver's crew will try to find a way to cheat a bit if they can get away with it.

I am not going to tell you who to pick.
I am not going to tell you who my family prays will win.
I hope I have shown you that you can have all types of "favorites"......oh yeah...even the best commercials! It makes Sundays bearable when a sport is sort of forced gently upon you.
Enjoy!

I pull for any driver out of the DEI (Dale Earnhardt Inc.) shop, just because I always have. If you want a great driver to pull for you have to go with Tony Stewart. That guy can drive a dishwasher to a win. If you want a driver with integrity you gotta go with Jeff Burton (also a great driver). Jeff is always about what is best for his team and his sport. Never more evident than at Las Vegas this year. Good luck and have fun.

Kasey Kahne. Hes very respectable. When he does something wrong, he admits it. When someone does something to him, he accepts it and moves on without whining and blaming other people. He is very good. He has had some bad luck so far this year, but I'm hoping that will change. and he is very hot.

But, the main reason why I think you should pick Kasey is cause hes the one who got me into racing. My step dad was watching a race early last year. I was waiting for it to be over so I could watch what I wanted to. And he was asking me who I thought would win, and I said that I didnt know because I dont like racing. So, he told me to just watch it and pick somebody, a little bit later I decided that I thought this guy named Kasey Kahne would win. He said ok, hes good but Jeff Gordon's going to win. So we watched the rest of the race and I was actually having fun watching NASCAR! and Kasey Kahne won. Then later I saw him on victory lane and I was like WOW he's hot. Ive watched every race ever since and I still love Kasey.

I can't tell you who to pull for. I pull for Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. I also like Terry and Bobby Labonte, Kyle Petty, and some other drivers. I'm not a Dale Jr. fan, but I do think he's an okay driver. Think of some qualities you like about each driver and then choose the one who has the best qualities. Watch the pre-race and post race interviews, listen to what the drivers are saying and choose from that. Don't let other people make the choice for you.

Someone with integrity, a good sport, and you can respect? Well, it's really too bad that you're just now becoming a fan. Mark Martin is on his retirement tour right now, and is slowly weaning himself away from racing the cup series. He'll only be racing in a limited number of races this year. But, you just described him to a TEE. He is definately one of the finest sportsman of our time, and will surely be missed by many.

Besides Mark Martin, I'd say that Jeff Burton, Elliot Sadler and Bobby Labonte are all three very fine sportsman. Kyle Petty also fits those shoes, but he NEVER wins races. Heck, he rarely runs anywhere even in the same vicinity of the top 20. He is still a fine sportsman though. He actually stopped his car, a few years back, during a caution to check on a driver whose car was on fire (Bobby Labonte). He also puts in alot of time to the charity that his late son started, the Victory Junction Camp.

To choose the right driver, you'll just have to take some time and get to know some of the drivers for yourself. Every NASCAR fan is different, even if they are fans of the same driver. But, I do hope that you get as much out of the sport as your husband. I, personally, got hooked on NASCAR back in 2001 and now I watch it more than football.

My favorite driver is Dale Earnhardt Jr. Alot of people will argue that Dale Jr. is just riding the coat tails of his daddy. But Jr. is his own man. He does have his daddy's name, and he did follow his daddy into racing, and he did get his initial fame from the loyal fans that turned to him after his fathers death in 2001. But, he has proven himself as a good competitor.

Along with Jr., I like Tony Stewart (who has an aggressive attitiude), and Elliot Sadler.

Jeff Burton and Mark Martin. There is no one else on the track I respect and admire more, but I am also a fan of Dale Jr. He is not perfect and not trying to be his Dad, and has grown up a lot and takes responsibility when he makes a mistake (wrecked Brian Vickers last year etc etc)

Don't let someone else pick who YOUR favorite driver is going to be. Just watch the races and the interviews and decide on your own who you like. :)

Personally, I root for Jr. I've grown up around Nascar and my entire family (besides one Gordon fan, ew) has always rooted for the Earnhardt family. I've grown up around Earnhardt fans and turned into one. Jr is a great racer and he's a great guy. He's not cocky and doesn't throw hissy fits if he loses. Harvick is a close second in my book. He's just an all around great guy and a pretty damn good driver, too.

Just keep watching it and you'll find yourself liking certain drivers and not liking drivers. It's part of the fun. It does make the race more exciting if you're pulling for someone, but it makes it more irritating if they crash and your yelling at the TV. Keep watching and you'll get into it. But if you need someone to pull for, Matt Kenseth all the way.
