My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 6-7 months ago and he has completed his radiation treatment for now. However, my dad now complains of having a sore throat that feels completely raw from his throat to his stomach and anything he eats it has to be soft. My dad tried to explain this to the first doctor but she replied with that it could not have come from the radiation{ mind you he's never experience this before until now} and that he should seek another specialist. He has another appointment in a few days but in the meantime I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with radiation treatment??

I've gone through both external and internal radiation treatments for Prostate Cancer and did not experience anything like your Dad is reporting. I did a considerable amount of research re the treatments, and side-effects --- sore throat is not one of them. More site specific effects such as renal & bladder problems are what would normally be expected. However, radiation does affect people differently, thus I think he should follow-up with his Dr. and request that she contact other Oncologists to see if they are aware of any such reports.

Your dad sounds like he may have oral candida which has spread into his esophagus (the tube which takes food from his mouth to his stomach)
He needs to be on oral Nystatin or Mycelex as soon as possible, because this can get really bad and then he will not be able to swallow at all.
Look inside his mouth and throat for white spots or a really beefy red tongue.. Even if he does not have the white spots, he may be in the beginning of thrush which is known in the medical world as candida. Sometimes it starts in the back of the throat, so look there too.
A few days is too long to wait for his doctor to prescribe something. Call the MD and ask for some Nystatin swhish and swallow to be called to his pharmacy tonite. It cant hurt anything just to try it, and in a couple of days the MD will probably order a small pink pill to treat it

From the National Cancer Institute, the 7 warning signs of cancer are--

C- Change in bowel or bladder habits

A- A sore that does not heal

U- Unusual bleeding or discharge

T- Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere

I- Indigestion or Dysphagia (difficult or painful swallowing)

O- Obvious change in wart or mole

N- Nagging cough or hoarseness

Five hundred years ago, people said the world was flat. Today, people say that if the FDA and AMA haven't blessed something, it can't be real good. Well, here's something I know to be real AND good. It's a little different take on cancer treatment--

In 1990, I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma, stage 3-B, but I've survived. My doctors were great people, but they were limited to surgery, chemo and radiation by profitable AMA treatment policy. During the year in treatment, I started learning about alternative medicine. I'm a retired engineer, and this is what I've pieced together--our IMMUNE SYSTEMS become weakened by poor nutrition, lack of exercise and reduced oxygen. Once that happens, our body becomes vulnerable to common STRESSORS. Stressors can be environmental, like viruses, heavy metals, pesticides, food additives, electromagnetic waves or pollution. They can be internal things like emotional or job stress, or poisonous people in our lives. Aging is also a contributing factor. So this means:

WEAK IMMUNE SYSTEM + STRESSORS = DISEASE (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc.)

Our bodies have 60 trillion--yes, trillion--cells, and there are always some mutating into cancer cells, but a healthy immune system kills them before they have a chance to get a foothold in the body.

It takes a LONG time, usually, or a high level of stressors, to weaken the immune system to the point where it won't do its job, but once cancer has formed, it will generally spread rapidly.

THIS IS IMPORTANT! There are ways to BEAT cancer that are currently being used in Europe and around the world, and there are some great books on the subject. I know because I've read about 50 of them from cover to cover. Here's a list of the best ones. Some are out of print and getting hard to find--

"The Cure for All Cancers", ISBN 0963632825
"The Cure for All Advanced Cancers", ISBN 1890035165
"A Cancer Therapy", ISBN 0882681052
"Oxygen Therapies", ISBN 0962052701
"Hydrogen Peroxide--Medical Miracle", ISBN 1885236077
"The Natural Cure for Cancer--Germanium", ISBN 0533071410
"Killing Cancer", ISBN 0705000966
"Natural Cures 'They' Don't Want You to Know About", ISBN 0975599518

I know of people whose cancer has 'spontaneously remitted' (WENT AWAY for no known reason) AFTER they went on programs of herbs and nutrition to restart their immune systems.

You and your family must look out for yourselves to stand a chance of being healthy. This is not a joke, and I'm not selling anything--just trying to help.
I am using the things I learned in those books right now to fight off a second infestation of cancer. I've been at it for over a year now, and think I'm going to make it. Use what works for you, and pass on your success. Best of luck.

AMA AND FDA--
The American Medical Association (AMA) and the pharmaceutical companies control medical law and the FDA in this country with heavy lobbying and a revolving door policy. WHY would they want to do this? It's about the money. In 2006, medicine (doctors, hospitals, researchers and pharmaceutical firms) received 2.1 TRILLION dollars--15% of the total earnings (GNP 13.7 trillion) in the U.S. This is astounding! It means MILLIONS of people worked the whole year just to pay the nation's medical expenses!! That's totally astounding, and just too big to care about individuals.

If they aimed it at his throat, then yes, but I doubt that they did that..Is he getting proper nutrition with enough vitamins, minerals and proteins to help him to heal properly (as best he can)...bland cool protein foods include cold hard boiled eggs and rax or arby's roast beef sandwiches (plain)...also bottled water is good...Maybe they might have put a breathing tube in during his surgery and could he could have a scratchy throat from that or even from a dry heated room, dehydration (drink more fluids), nausea and vomiting, or some sort of sore throat from germs (ie strep throat)...

Candida mentioned above would be from taking a lot of antibiotics, usually...

As a radiation therapist, I can assure you that your father's symptoms are not secondary to radiation treatment of the prostate. Radiation therapy is a very targeted treatment which, although harmful to tissue, only harms the tissue within its path. Your father's radiation effects will be limited to the skin and pelvic organs, such as the bowel and bladder, if he has any late effects.

Radiation therapy is site specific. Meaning the radiation is only directed at the target area. He must be dealing with something else. If he has been throwing up it could be that. or nasty cold, or maybe new medication he is on.

Radiation is very specific to the area it treats. The radiation would not travel from the exact area of treatment to any further areas. Could it be something like acid reflux?

I did experience that, but my radiation field was directly on my throat. Keep asking until you get some decent answers.
