Trial and error. They put EVERYTHING in their mouth.

Maybe because when you go to a restaurant, the kids know that they're there to eat, then the first thing they get is crayons. Pretty confusing I guess. Our 21 month old boy will not stop doing that, it's so frustrating!

They just put things in their mouths, maybe they aren't sure if it is food or not. The 18 month old kids at my daycare like eating crayons, and play dough. We have to constantly watch them to make sure they aren't eating the things we hand them for art and such.

Everything goes in their mouths. Lucky for us the crayons are non-toxic! =)

in my psychology class we learned that it is natural for babies of this age to test drive everything by putting it into their mouths. It is there way for exploring thangs. This is weird because I don't see the evolutionary advantage. Than again I have no higher education. Peace

Small children don't know any better. They are learning and exploring using all of their senses to do it. Touch, taste, smell, feel, and hearing. It is our responsibility to keep watch over them to make sure they don't hurt their self's in this process.

bc they are colorful, and that's how they explorer things... by putting thing in their mouth!
Plus they are kids they don't know better!!
