The reasons are simple, even from a purely business standpoint.

Increasing costs for materials, disposal, distribution and event litigation that are the direct result of wasteful or non-sustainable methods, sources of supply and industry.

Most sustainable approaches are actually profitable to the company while greatly reducing the exposure or expense of various liabilities. Many also have social benefits such as reducing the need to deal with problem areas of the world to obtain diminishing or contested supplies of materials.

There are also increasing incentives, both financial and from a PR perspective, as well as long term issues such as improved workplace conditions and worker health issues.

Another aspect is that sustainable sources of supply are just that, sustainable, and therefore less prone to wild price fluctuations and shortages. These are important factors when you are trying to run a business and control your overhead and do your financial projections reliably.

Don't listen to the nay saying whackos. The world has changed and smart business people see the changes they need to make to stay competitive.

The sooner you invest in sustainable methods the faster you will get to the payoff.

By the way, if this is a practical issue for you as a business owner I would be happy to speak to your further and possibly assist you on a consulting basis as this is what I do for a living. Just email me at the address in my profile.

What is ES...
It's meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. For example: keeping population densities below the carrying capacity of a region, the use of renewable resources, conserving and establishing priorities for the use of non-renewable resources, and keeping environmental impact below the level required to allow affected systems to recover and continue to evolve.

How are businesses affected:
They'll need to adapt to meet the changing demands of the public and undoubtedly the laws imposed by governments. A typical example being the oil and power companies which in recent years have been developing renewable energy sources and branching out into areas outside their core business concerns.

It's nothing more than another mutisyllabic nonsensical term that individuals and organizations use to try to trick you into believing their pure uneducated and unprovable "facts", "global warming" being the latest. Business activities are affected by the laws these "tree-huggers" get passed to mess up normal, healthy business practices and set back otherwise economically viable companies. God Bless you.
