My little brother has ADHD and although he is getting a little better now that he is getting older (he is 6) I would like to get him to be a little more focused and spend time with kids his own age so he learns how to interact without getting over excited and putting other kids off with his chattering. What is a good activity to get him involved in and how can I fit it between my familys work schedule and my brothers long school days (7-4)? His school has no extra curriculars either because its reading and math intensive.

PS- It has to be something we can be sure he is getting paid attention to very often because he gets distracted easily and can wander and get hurt.

My son is seven years old and has ADHD. He plays soccer, basketball, and baseball. The most important thing is that anything he plays you let the coach know and usually they know how to deal with them or can be more understanding. I will give you an example...my son's baseball coach knows that my son is adhd and he asked us what position that we thought he would be best at. My husband told him something that will keep his attention, so the coach put him as catcher. It was a great decision. My son loves playing catcher and he is good at it. I can tell you that if he were outfield or somewhere where there was no action, he would be dancing on the field or playing in the dirt!

I have worked with kids with disabilities for years. One of the best activities for kids (especially boys) with ADHD always seems to be martial arts. The teaching is focused and there isn't alot of running about. It helps teach them to focus their minds and can help teach them ways of coping with their symptoms. After about two weeks, most boys with ADHD get sick of it because it is so controlled. If they are made to stick with it, by the end of the first month they are loving it and pour themselves into it. Swimming is another good way for him to get what he needs. So is scouting (boy scouts). All of these activities show a real positive change in kids with ADHD in my experience those are the ones I would go with.

martial arts is great. it teaches self disipline and there is always someone close by. swimming could be good to, provided it's a small class and basketball. it's a team sport so it teaches the value of teamwork and it isn't so big that he'll get lost in the shuffle. your local park district should have all this and more. check it out. and-good for you for thinking of your little bro. it can be tough living with a sibling who gets into a lot of stuff. it's nice that you are trying to help him.
