depending on how your long distance company handles its international calls it may either be routed to the other continent from satellite, or via the trans-atlantic telephone cable burried under the ocean

I am not real sure of your question, I am assuming that you mean how does it happen. If you mean something different add a comment to your question and I will try to answer.

In the US you make a long distance by making what is referred to as a 1+ call, you dial a 1, and the ten digit phone number. The number 1 as the first digit says that it is a long distance call within North America, the next three digits are called the area code which is an area withing a given state, the next trehh are called the office code which identifies the actual telephone switch location, and the last four digits are the actual telephone number.

To make an international call the sequence is similar. You start with either a 011, or a 01. The 011 will bill the call to your telephone, the 01 will have an operator come on after dialing and ask how you want to pay for the call (credit card, third number). After the 011 you need a country code and a city code. These are normally listed in the front of any phone book. after that you need the actual phone number. So an international number would look like 011+country code+city code+telephone number.

When calling within the US you will always have a ten digit number. When phoning internationally, there is no set standard for the number of numbers for a telephone.

I hope that helps, if not tell me exactly what you are looking for.

An actual cable is laid under water across the oceans. The trans-atlantic is just one example.

Our oceans are cris-crossed by cables.
