Theres no huge difference between the XTi and the 30D. I mean the 30D is more prosumer and is build to last. Here are some major differences between the two:
30D vs 400D
Metal vs Plastic Body
Large Grip vs Small Grip
8MP vs 10MP
Spot Meter vs No Spot
2nd LCD (Status LCD and Previewing LCD) vs One Large LCD

Also the 30D has a thumb wheel which makes it easier to change settings during shoots but of course if you can do without it, the XTi is a great camera. Overall I would choose the XTi over the 30D just because I can do without the spot meter and thumb wheel (of course theres other things hte 30D has but hte XTi doesnt but I didnt need it)

Get the XTi if you do not need the all the prosumer features the 30D has or if you do not plan on using the SLR for heavy use. If you plan on getting down and dirty with your camera and need the durabilty then I would get the 30D.

As has been said already, the Rebel XTi is a light duty camera meant for casual photography. It will not be a great choice for someone who is taking hundreds of photos on a daily basis or for a living.

The EOS 30D is a midrange pro camera with a few more functions than the Rebel. It has a higher rating for the lifespan of the mechanicals in the body. It is also larger and slightly heavier.

And as the other poster commented, do take a look at the Nikon line of pro and amateur cameras.

The D200 is a bit more than I would ever be able to make use of, but it would most likely be working 20 years from now. Nikons are very well built overall.

Do look at the D40x and D80 models. Both are great values for the price.

The XTi is a great little camera, but only for amateurs or advanced enthusiasts. It has a very small grip which makes it difficult for some, especially if using larger lenses.

A pro would use the 30D since it can accept a handhold, and is heavier duty. But only has 8mp.

If you are considering these two, you might also consider the D80 or D200.

Check the www.dpreview.com website for unbiaed reviews of all four cameras.

By the way, you can't go wrong with any of these!!!

The XTI is 10 MP the 30D (XT) is 8 MP

The 30D is the European version of the American XT

The 40D is the European version of the XTI

The XT is like $700 almost everywhere with lens (kit). The XTI is more.
