I am an african american female, and for the longest I've wanted to grow my hair natural, but I don't know how to start. As of right now my hair is bone straight from a wholel life of perms. One problem that I have is that while my natural hair is growing out I don't know what to do with it, so it looks nice and well-kept along with my chemically treated hair. My hair is already unhealthy. Can anyone help me, i'm desperate for answers, how do I make a smooth transition?

I am going natural too! First you have to wait for your natural hair to grow for a while let it grow out to a acceptable length and then if you want to you can chop off the relaxed hair if you feel comfortable or just go to the salon and hav it done professinally to have your hair well treated and taken care of, or you can keep it braided.

Option 1: wear transition styles and trim off your permed hair little by little as your natural hair grows out. You can try a wet set, a simple bun, natural or extension braids, etc.

Option 2: cut off your permed hair all at once.

Deep condition and keep your hair very moisturized no matter which option you choose.

Hope this helps, Kaya

I'm growing my hair out because of bad color so I'm sort of in the same boat. I find wearing my hair up is best. Those headbands that are now in fashion (thank God!) are life-savers. It'll hide your roots and you can put the rest of your hair in a ponytail/messy bun like I do. I wouldn't try chemically straightening your roots or anything, just suffer thru it I guess. Hats can be your friend too lol. Use leave-in conditioners and deep condition 1-2x a week and hopefully it'll keep your hair more manageable. Carol's Daughter has some nice hair oils.. you can find that brand on sephora.com, along with other brands that have products that may help you out.

just braid it or maybe even twist it an wait till all your natural hair grows out alil and just cut off the ends thats what im doin right now. I find that doin that makes ur hair grow out abit more better that using all those stupid perms because perms are really not good for your hair at all. and don't color your hair as well itll probably damage it even more just wait alil while before u do that

When I had perms my hair broke off some and my mom got 2 eggs and put them in my hair when i got ready to wash. Then i used Pantene for black women shampoo and conditoner. It works very well. And after all that i just press my hair. But the only problem is when you sweat your hair line gets nappy.

Straighten your hair with a straightening iron as it grows out then cut off the ends. You could also braid it or wear weaves or wigs until it grows out.

sorry but i think the only way if you've had all those perms is to shave it off. scary i know, but eventually, your hair will become a whole lot healthier and better, and you can try bunches of different styles too

I think Halley Berry looks her prettiest when her hair is short. Take the plunge and cut yours real short to, and start all over.
