Christening is not another name for baptism like a few have suggested here. Christening is to give a Christian name to a baby. It is similar to a baptism ceremony, but the baby is named during this. This dates back to the time that you were given a "christian name" by the priest and a "family name." It is something more associated with the Catholic church, while the other Christian churches have baptism. It is also a ceremony of dedication of something that is new.
