There are a number of tried and true methods. One is to use humor. Think of a funny situation and laugh about it. For example, if you think the guy who just cut you off in traffic is a big "turkey" for being so rude, just imagine that a big fowl, turkey is sitting behind the wheel driving....visualizing a big turkey can help you calm down.
Another way is to diffuse the situation by taking a "time out." Walk away for a minute, count to ten, or twenty, or a hundred. Disengage and take a walk around the block.
A very wise man named David O. McKay once said that when he and his wife had a disagreement, he would take a walk around the block. When he got back home, he would throw his hat through the doorway. If his hat came flying back out, he knew that another walk around the block was needed.

I know that many people cannot do this, but I take a long drive by myself when I am mad. I do not drive like a maniac. I think that applying my mind to driving carefully takes the focus off the problem at hand. Hope things are going well for you.

It depends why or what has made you mad? Usually its best to remove yourself from the situation until you've calmed down.

Since you asked this in "parenting," I'm presuming that you are talking in regards to your children. You didn't give any details. So, my advice is to get away from the situation until you calm down.
