I went to the mall bought and something, they swiped the credit card and the receipt printed, but then the cashier asked me for my credit card again and put it under the receipt they keep, and used a pencil to trace the credit card numbers
Why did the Cashier do this?

In the past, before electronic swiping machines were everywhere, this is how stores would record that you have made a payment with the credit card and for what amount. They will send this to the credit card people and they will charge you.
Most likely, their electronic transfer things were not working or your card would not swipe on their system, so they needed to take your information down to indicate that you paid.

I don't know. If they can electronically scan the card, it woudn't seem to me they need an imprint. I doubt there is anything sinister or criminal though. Maybe they still use paper for some part of their record keeping on credit card charges and they want the number on their copy of the sales receipt.

With the right equipment you could change the magnetic encoding to be another account number. Many stores require clerks to verify the numbers to see if they match the receipt. The tracing is probably to protect themselves against a future problem.

To prove that you were there at the store with your credit card. I know it's weird - but, there has been so much fraud that way it protects the person selling the item. Either way you look at it, the company has your credit card number. But, tracing the number identifys that the card was present at the time of purchase.

I would call corporate and ask. I would also call your CC company and have them issue you a new card to be safe.

This sounds fishy. Call the manager of the business right away. Good luck.
