Sit ups to burn fat? No. The rule of thumb for a "six pack" is having around 6-7% bodyfat minimum. Determine how much fat you are currently carrying. (Let's say for an example, you are currently 15% bodyfat~about average for most semi-active males~) That means in the example you have about 19 pounds of total fat on your body.

Now you are trying to achieve a look of a six pack, so lets take that figure from 15% to about 7% (roughly half). You need to lose about 10 pounds of fat. One pound of fat is 16 ounces of fat. Since most people cannot lose more than about 2-3 ounces of fat per day on the strictest diet and exercise routine, I would recommend about 80-90 days of HARDCORE DISCIPLINED diet and exercise to accomplish this. The slower the diet, the better; you lose less muscle.

To read the best material on getting in top shape the right way, goto Barnes and Noble or Borders and buy any and all material about Mike Mentzer. Stay away from the magazines! They are full of too much misinformation and try to sell you crap you don't need.

It sounds like you probably need some more calories to add muscle. Doing so many may actually be working against you if you arent eating enough calories to actually add muscle. try incorporating a protien shake daily and see if that works. Also your body weight is probably not enough to require your abs to grow bigger. You can hold a little weight on your chest or use a machine or incline bench for extra resistance.

you have to have low percentage of body fat so your abs can be seen. sit ups alone wont do it, you need to do ab workout for about 30min 3-4 times a week and work them out from every angle.
weight lifting would help to gain muscle.
