In Mark 3:28-29 Jesus says:

"I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."

Can someone please explain what this means?
Thank you.

It sounds like a contradiction to many churches teaching of the trinity.

Mark 3:28-29 says "I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."

Matthew 12:31 also says "And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven."

Footnotes tell us that this is speaking of a misuse of the name of God. "Technically, according to the scribes, blasphemy involved direct and explicit abuse of the divine name." ....... Perhaps a willing and continually abuse of the divine name.

Christians sometimes wonder if they have committed this sin of blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. Christians need not worry about this sin; it is a heart-attitude of unbelief and unrepentance. Deliberate, ongoing rejection of the work of the Holy Spirit is blasphemy because it is rejecting God himself. The religious leaders accused Jesus of blasphemy, but ironically they were the guilty ones when they looked him in the face and called him Satan. Also in Matthew 12:31 Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is denying that the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin. A person can be saved only through the Holy Spirit's work, to refuse to repent or even to acknowledge our sin is to refuse God's forgiveness.

Sins can be forgiven through the atoning blood of Jesus Christ. However, if you have received a divine witness of the existence of God, and have obtained a personal testimony of the divine Sonship of Christ, AND THEN turn you back on it and deny it, that is the "blasphemies against the Holy Spirit that cannot be forgiven. And a person so sinful is confined to outer darkness never to see God again, the eternal sin.

This is adressed to non Christians. When the Spirit of God knocks at the door of a person but this person refuses the invitation, then this is the beginning pattern of blasphemy against the the Holy Spirit. The Spirit can come back and knock again. If the person keeps refusing Christ he is doing a blasphemy which will condemn him eternally.

In the end times when Satan is here on earth pretending to be Jesus, people are going to be brought up before his temple to be converted into believing he is the real Jesus. Well god will have arranged to have a number of people whom He calls His "elect". These elect are here specifically to blow Satan's cover and wittiness to the fact that he is really Satan and not Jesus. This part is important. These elect are instructed by god that they are not to premeditate before hand what they will say when they are in front of Satan. Because what they are to say will be given unto them within that hour through the holy spirit. But if they refuse to say what the holy spirit puts in their mind but instead says something else then that is the unforgivable sin . it will not be forgiven in this world or the world to come. and you can take that to the bank.

Right before He said this the Pharisees had seen Him cast out a demon, and they said that He was casting it out using the power of Satan. Attributing the works of the Holy Spirit to the works of the devil is intolerable in the sight of God. The next line in this passage is just as important as what you wrote.
Mark 3:30 "because they said "He has an unlean spirit""

Essentially calling good evil is an abomination to God.

I made a video that talks about this on youtube here's a link:

What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? And why is that not forgiven?

What is the work of the Holy Spirit? It is nothing less than the grace to bring one in faith to God. Can this grace, or work of the Holy Spirit, be rejected? Yes, we are not forced to have faith in God.... So will you be saved if you do not have faith in God... Obviously not.

If you do not accept Christ's sacrifice on the cross in order to save you from sin, you cannot be forgiven. The blasphemy is in not ACCEPTING it. The Holy Spirit cannot dwell within you, if you do not believe.

People who have a knowledge of God and turn against it cannot be forgiven. Luckily most of us stay in the realm of faith and never see God. Christ is explaining why he can't show them conclusive proof of his divinty, although his resurrection sure seems like proof. At any rate, the same goes for us; we must exercise faith, and we will receive the gospel line upon lie. This way we do not receive more than we can handle at any one time, and we are not accountable for kowledge that is not necessary for us to know.

Sins and evil words can be forgiven if you ask forgiveness.Any deed we do against others can be forgiven by God but to damn God can not be forgiven. Disrespecting God who gave you life and the words to live by can't be forgiven
