Let L = the length
Let H = the height
Let W = the width

H = L-1
W = L-2

For volume multiply L X W X H so you get
Volume = (L) x (L-2) x (L-1)

When you multiply out those terms you get
L cubed - 3L squared +2L which is the answer

Basic Formulae given by problem:

Height = Length - 1
Width = Length - 2

Formula for Volume:

Volume = Height * Length * Width

Substitution into Volume Formula:

Volume = (Length - 1) * (Length) * (Length - 2)

Volume = (Length ^ 2 - Length) * (Length - 2)

Volume = Length ^ 3 - Length ^ 2 - 2 * Length ^ 2 + 2 Length

Volume = Length ^ 3 - 3 * Length ^ 2 + 2 Length

The volume is height * length * width
The height is length - 1 and the width is length - 2
So the volume is (length - 1) * length * (length - 2)
