There is a persistent urban legend regarding the items kept in the ball located on top of the flagpole. Legend holds that this ball contains one bullet, a razor blade and a book of matches. The reasoning is that the razor blade and the book of matches are to destroy the flag in order to prevent its being captured. The bullet is for the last defender of the post to kill himself or herself after destroying the flag.

This is all a myth. In reality it is nothing more than a metal ball (some are hollow - some are not) with nothing inside.

the NCO promotion book says that the ball contains a 9mm bullet a razor and a match. Meaning the last man left is suppose to destory the flag with the match and the razor. So that it can't be taken by the enemy. The 9mm bullet is so that u won't be captured if u choose not too. Prolly just army lore but is an e6 promotion board question (potentially) depending on ur board.

from what i can gather the truck on th e pole is supposed to be the housing for a bullet, razor, book of matches. and if the U.S. were to be taken over and you were the last line of defense about to be overrun, then you would climb the flag pole, take the items in the truck and flag down, cutthe stars and stripes from the flag, use the matches to burn them, then to prevent holocaust against yourself from the invaders you would use the bullet to kill yourself.
