My friend wore one of those islamic outfits to school one day to help my friend with a presentation. But she liked it so much she wore it the whole day and the day after that. The second day a security guard told her she had to take it off, saying it was against dress code. Now her whole face was covered so we figured that was what he ment, so she took the head off. A few minutes after that another security guard came by and told her she had to take the whole thing off. That's against the rules right? I mean she wasn't Islamic but we're studying different religions and right after Buddhism we're gonna study Islam. But not the point. Shouldn't my friend have the same right as the other Islams in the school to wear that outfit? How where the security guards suppossed to know she wasn't Islam? She could've been, it's a possibility. We're probably not gonna wear it again, but we're gonna talk to the principal about this and I wanna know what our rights are.

sorry it appears I wasn't specific enough. and I ment muslim not islam. anyway it's called a hijab and we go to a public school in arizona (USA). I've seen girls walking around wearing the hijab and veil so I know it's not against dress code violations.

The hijab is the headscarf that covers the hair and neck. The abaya is the long robe that covers from the neck to the feet. The niqab is the veil that covers the face. And no it was wrong of security to tell the girl even if she isn't Muslim to take the Muslim women dress off. I'm not sure what rights you'll have really. Ask the principal and explain to the Principal why the girl was wearing traditional Muslim girl and women dress.

Yes, I would go to the principal for this matter. If the headscarf is not against the dress code then it was wrong for the security guard to do this.
It doesn't matter if she is Muslim or not. She still has the right to wear what she wants as long as it's not against the dress code.
What you could point out the principal that what the security officer did was racial profiling.
However, I'm not an expert on these things. Perhaps you could try in another section such as law or the police section.
Good luck. It's good that you are willing to stand up and fight against injustice.

Are you referring to a Burka? Full black dress from head to foot covering her face? If so, you say she removed the face veil when asked what other part of the outfit was she breaking the rules with? It's against the schools policy to cover your body? Where on earth is this school? Muslim or not if she wanted her arms and legs covered who has the right to tell her she cant? Who has the right to tell a girl at your school to cover her legs if wearing a short skirt or cover her chest up if wearing a halter top? No one. What kind of school has security guards anyway? What on earth is the world coming too. Your friend should have the right to wear what she likes within the school dress code. If your school says no belly buttons on display fair enough you have to abide by the rules of the school but i don't understand any school having a rule saying you have to expose your arms and legs? what harm was she doing covering up Muslim or not? Trust me if she was a Muslim girl there is no way she would have removed it and no one would have the right to tell her too, your friend of course should have the same rights. Talk to your principal and tell him or her America is supposed to be the land of liberty and justice for all not a select few.
P.S. I'm not an American but Scottish and a Muslim. Good for you stand up for your rights.
Hijab does not cover the face. Hijab is just a head scarf type deal (no face covering on a hijab)

Hmm, this is kinda weird because from what I get from your post, other Muslim girls are allowed to wear the burka. Burka is usually black colored which covers the whole body. I don't really think that it would be 'against the dress code' since I don't think that there is anything wrong for covering up one's body. I would also go to the principal and ask/talk about this situation.

I AM MUSLIM and your right this guard has no business to tell you this esp if there are other students who are granted permission...and if she was confortable he should have let her be the main point that guard should have noticed first is that at least your friend wasn't walking around the school showing a bunch of skin...i am not sure what grade you and your friend are in...but i know high school girls like to show off their bodies...if you are in JH even but if you in elementry than you guys we not hurting anything but that guy's pride...maybe he has a problem with Muslim as so many do...maybe it made him sick that good people where showing interest...even if it was for a project...

Well, you need to review what the school's established dress code is. If there's nothing about her outfit that violates the established dress code (even public schools typically have them, and they're usually available on the school's website or in a course catalog of some sort), then they can't legally prevent her from wearing it. If it DOES violate dress code, though, then there's nothing you can do unless you want to fight the dress code.

Personally, I think she could wear it but if there is a dress code then I can understand the guard making her change, however, the dress code is for everyone so Muslims should not be exempted from the dress code. In France no one is allowed to wear the head scarf in schools now.

Depends on the outfit and the rules at your school. Some of the typcial Middle Eastern clothing presents safety problems.
Baggy, flowing garments present trip and fall hazards both to the wearer and to others. For example, you and someone in this type of dress are walking in opposite directions. As you pass by each other you accidentally step on the hem. The other person continues to move away pulling the hem beneath your foot and throwing you off balance.
Baggy garments also present an additional hazard if a fire breaks out. They are more likely to be set ablaze and harder to extinguish due to their volume.

Tats bulshlt. The islamic outfits are not revealing what-so-ever and are definatley in dress code. (exept the mask or veil)
you have every right to wear that and you can actualy sue the school for makeing you take it of. It is actualy in violation of the first amendment to make you take it of. You have the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happynes and if wearing sutch outfit makes you happy then so be it. The security guard is simply a muslm hater and racist that should be fired. You can actualy protest this byy haveing all your friends waer them too.

The school has the right to set dress code policy.
Your friend is not Islamic, so she does not have a legitimate religious exclusion. Not only is it disrespectful for her to continue to wear it beyond the presentation, as if it were a costume; but, the security guards have to be aware of students wearing clothing in which they could conceal firearms. Their number one job is to ensure your safety, so cut them some slack. There are more important problems in the world that you should be putting your energy behind.
