Go to your local rescue/shelter, and pick out the dog that catches your eye & heart. Don't worry about size, or breed.
If you worry about those things, you may pass up the perfect dog for you, just because he/she didn't fit your standard.

I know pitt bulls have a bad rap but thats because you would laugh if on the evening news you heard that a chihuahua or cocker spaniel or poodle or maltese bit the mailman or someones neighbor. But they are all land sharks!!!!!
So with that, i have never had a better dog than 2 pitt bulls,1 male / 1 female, that i was raised with, they are faithful, tolerant, and loving,.
They should be chosen as puppies and try to get some history on the parents (what kind of pets were they?)
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD DOG, ONLY BAD OWNERS!

Really tiny dogs just aren't a good match with kids. They are too fragile and need careful handling. Border terriers are smallish (around 14 pounds), but they are very sturdy and tend to be good with kids. Cavalier King Charles spaniels are 13-18 pounds and good with kids (they do have a lot of health problems though, so if you buy from a breeder you'd need to really check them out first and make sure they do all the health checks).

Enter Basset Hounds to the rescue!!!
Basset Hounds are great dogs because they are perfect for so many people. You could call them small dogs, but they are more like big dogs on short legs. they are placid and LOVE children...and adults....and anything living for that matter! They are very floppy and great for a cuddle, and they love walks of ALL lengths, you could walk miles one day and then go round the block the next. Also for sad looking dogs, they have such a happy outlook on life, it's hard to resist them!!
So what I'm trying to say is.....
GET A BASSET HOUND!!!!!
Hope this helps!

I agree with the idea of the animal shelter. So many homeless pets get overlooked all the time because people are used to turning to newspaper ads.
You'd be surprised how many adorable animals are in there!
Plus, you do something great: you save a cute little dog from a could-be dreadful fate!
It's inexpensive, too. Good luck!

a golden retriever is a great dog with kids, I had one when I was younger, I loved that big goof :). They range from medium to big but are good family/watch dogs and can be very playful.

I have a child and we got a Siberian Husky. They are medium sized dogs. Very hygenicaly clean, they do not mess in the house. They can not stand messing in their space. They are very gentle dogs, but they do have energy. As long as you can walk them each day, their energy level calms down. They learn tricks, and commands well. They absoulutely love their family and do not like being parted from them. Feel free to instant message me anytime.

I have a Jack Russell Terrier and she loves to play with my nieces and other children. My nieces are 2 and 6 months, and my dog is very gentle with them, never tried to do anything bad, she is actually quite protective of them when people pick them up...

I think you should get a live dog. Dead ones don't make much of a mess but they stink pretty bad if you don't bathe them regularly. And people tend to look at you funny when you're walking them down the street.
