my dad drinks at least one BIG can of beer every night, to my knowledge?

NO he is not! Alcoholism is an inability to control the amount you drink. For example, a person who drinks a beer or two every night is probably not an alcoholic. A person who drinks once a week but can't stop until they're drunk or the beer runs out probably is.

It sounds to me like your dad is well in control of his drinking. In Germany, for example, beer is considered a food and is often consumed at lunch and dinner. They often drink a liter (just over a quart) with a meal. They are no more alcoholic than your father.

No. A lot of people drink one glass of red wine per night per their doctor's consent, which has the same alcohol content as a can of beer. Does your dad get drunk a lot? Does his drinking affect his ability to be a dad to you or a husband to your mother? There's nothing wrong with a drink or two in the evening, unless he's getting drunk every night. Maybe you should talk to him and tell him you are upset by his daily drinking. If you are worried, maybe he'll stop.

Not neccessarily... alcholism is a tricky concept that tends to involve a great deal of denial and secret consumption. If your Dad feels as though he cannot get through the day without his big can of beer than this could be indicative of an alcohol problem. If his demeanor changes when he drinks this is also problematic because he is harming his family.. If you are feeling that his drinking is disrupting your family life or your relationship with him than I would seriosuly consider sitting down and discussing your perspective

I would say probably not, unless having the beer changes his behavior.

An adult male would have to have at least four or five drinks before the effects would really start to matter.

But it might be a problem if his behavior is off just because he doesn't get a beer on any given night. In this case, though, unless you see something abnormal about his actions, it probably is no big deal.

There is a difference between drinking too much and being an alkie. You may want to seek out an Al-Anon member to field this type of question for you.

Btw, the AMA suggests 3 to 4 drinks a day by the average man to promote normal liver function(unless ofcourse you're an alkie)

What a load of old rubbish most people have written.

Don't be so daft.
One can of beer a day does not mean alcoholism or anything like it.
What it does mean is that your dad likes a beer - and that's all.

OMG - yes, he is a total raving alcoholic. Just think of all the hard liquor he drinks when you are not around.

April fools.......

No, he is sooooo far from an alcoholic it's pathetic... He may drink a beer to calm his nerves so your mother begins nagging it will be easier for him to cope... LOL

No, he probably just likes beer. The difference would be if he were unable to choose NOT to drink.

If he drinks to an extent that his behavior interferes with his normal personal, family, social, or work life then he is an alcoholic..

It could well be if he drinks daily. If he only drinks one can and not more and doesn't go out drinking much he is just abusing alcohol and not an alcoholic. It is damaging his body though if drinks daily.
