I am due for another blood test, but if this comes up as 'within normal' I don't know what I am going to do. I am not just not losing weight, but I am actually gaining it! I have four children and am renovating a house at the moment, I shouldn't even have the time to gain weight!! I don't want to be thin, but I'd like to be a sort of average size. Help I feel huge!

I know that snook!! That is half the problem, I don't eat that much any way, never really very hungry. Hubby does the cooking, lots of fresh food, trust me nothing ever comes from a tin in our house!!

Caroline, I lost a patch of hair at the front of my head, and it was awful, it was in a place that you could not disguise, even with the best styling technique. Love to all fellow sufferers. Oh and btw for those who think we are overeaters we don't need to be told about calorie intake, this is one of those diseases that doesn't work like that!!

Kissmy... I do eat fresh food, veggies and fruit are already a major part of my diet; see above. Why do I bother to add additional details if no-one bothers to read them!!!

Have you ever tried Armour? I have Hashimoto's myself and it does not respond well to synthetic thyroid hormone replacement treatments (THR).

I took Synthroid in the beginning but it gave me headaches, heart palpitations, anxiety, etc. The problem with Synthroid is that it is a T-4 only med and a damaged thyroid can sometimes have a difficult time converting the synthetic T-4 to T-3. Armour has both T-4 and T-3.

I switched to Armour after less than six months, but when my doctor would not increase my dosage from the initial 1 grain (60 mg) starting dose, I found a different doctor. I currently am up to 2 1/2 grains (150 mg) and have lost over ten pounds in the last month (with some diet adjustments and supplement additions taken into account as well).

I would also ask your doctor to check your Free T-3's and Free T-4's, as well as your cortisol levels. Sluggish adrenals can sometimes be to blame for continued ailments after starting THR. If your doctor continues to hold you hostage to your TSH and refuses to listen to your ongoing symptoms, I would start to look for a different doctor. Below is a link to a good website with lots of information, including how to find a good doc.

Good luck!

Perhaps your levels really aren't where they should be. When you test, it should on;y be done in the morning. That's because TSH is highest while we sleep, so you want to test as close as you can to first waking up. Testing in the afternoon will most likely result in a much lower TSH and you won't get the dosage you need. For weight loss, the morning TSH needs to be below 2.0, close to 1.0. If it's not at this level weight loss will be extremely difficult and you may even gain weight.

Once you get your morning TSH to around 1.0, exercise 3-4 days a week for at least 30 minutes. Also, watch your carb intake and stay away from soy. You may also want to only use non-fluoride toothpaste. Both soy and fluoride suppress thyroid function.

The best I can tell you for now is to get the TSH around 1.0. If that doesn't help, then its possible you need both T4 and T3 or that you should be tested for insulin resistance. I've been through it all and finally feel good.

Hypothyroidism is a strange one; after thyroxine treatment begins it takes at least a year or so for the main symptoms to disappear and that is providing your levels are correct every 3 months. The dosage that you are on, may require adjusting; do you feel tired and lack concentration ?

Apart from that I personally take Kelp from Holland and Barrats which is a derivative of seed weed( apparently). Anyway check with your Gp first and do ask for fat busters of which do not enter your bloodstream but helps burn up fats.

I am on 100microgrammes of thyroxine but it took my GP ages before he eventually put the dose up, by which time I went from a size 10 to a curvy size 16. ( Joking) I have managed to get down to a size 14 without the exercise, eating simple veg and fruit( using kelp and fat buster tablets) this is a slow process when you have an underactive thyroid. What about the Hair, my hair at first was so thin it was falling out. A nasty nasty disease, because us females like to keep our looks and this disease is one where most people with it look like their disease( text book stuff actually, but true).

Thyroid disease is one of the most common health problems we face today. From a practical standpoint, there are many ways to approach this issue. Learn here https://tr.im/AhT9d

Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is a very common problem, and there are many reasons for this, including drinking chlorinated and fluoridated water, and eating brominated flour.

Chlorine, fluoride, and bromine are all in the same family as iodine, and can displace iodine in your thyroid gland.

Secondly, many people simply aren't getting enough iodine in their diet to begin with. The amount you get from iodized salt is just barely enough to prevent you from getting a goiter.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Get started today!

I recently found a good online resource about hypothyroidism. I wanted to know more about treatment options and how to stop hypothyroidism at the source and I bumped into this program called hypothyroidismrevolution. I found it very useful. Check it out here http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=560

Clean up your diet. Eat a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats. Stop eating anything that has either sugar or artifical sweetners in it. Artifical sweetners actually make you eat more. Dont drink anything thats carbonated. If you do these things you will lose weight and you will be healthier also.
