Have your toddler put all their pacifiers (nuks) in a gift bag or shopping bag, then have them hang it on a tree. Say, "While you are taking your nap the speacial "Nuk Fairy" will come and take your nuks and give you a special prize!" While he or she is sleeping put a sticker or small toy in the bag. (Throw the nuks away.) Then wake him or her up from her nap and PRESTO! She or he gets prize and the worry is over. If they cry during the night give them a stuffed animal to sleep with instead of a nuk. I hope this helps!

I saw this on SuperNanny. They told the little girl that the pacy fairy (or nuk fairy in your case) had realized she was a big girl and didn't need them anymore, and the fairy wanted to come that night to take all her pacies to little babies who did need them...and that she would get a present in place of the pacies. The girl was surprisingly helpful in rounding up all her pacies, even handing over the one in her mouth, and they put them all in a bag and tied them to a tree outside. Then the girl got a little toy in the bag the next day and a note saying thanks for being a big girl and helping the babies.

That's how I remember it, anyway. It might not work for everyone but it sure worked for that little girl!

For my brother, my mom bought him a different brand of pacifier and gave it to him, and he didn't like that kind as much, so he sucked it less and wasn't as attatched...and then one day she threw them away and he never said a word.

Here's some of the things I've heard of people doing (we never used pacifiers so I can't give personal experience):

Gradually cut back the tip a bit each day so that it eventually becomes impossible to suck on.

Have a special celebration where you gather up all the pacifiers with your child and pack them up to give to new babies (I've even heard of parents going so far as to take their kids to the local maternity ward and handing the package over to the nurses with a note attached to trash them after you leave).

Cold turkey--though if you don't have something else the child can use to comfort themself you'll probably be miserable for a few days.

Get rid of all of them and tell the tot the doggie ate it. Bad doggy! My kid fell for that one with no problem. Poof! it's gone. The next time he sees a kid with a nuk, tell him oh, you better watch out! The doggy will take it.

I would say just throw it away. They will soon realise that they won't be getting it back no matter how much they whine. Within a few days they won't even realise it was there anymore. I threw all of my nieces away on her first birthday. It only took her a day to learn that she wouldn't be getting them back.

If she is only using it sparingly like bed time or when she is cranky, then it may be time to try to get rid of it. Tell her that she is becoming a big girl now that she has to get rid of her binky. Try to get her to go to sleep with out it by singing her to sleep, reading a book before bed or rubbing her back so she will go to sleep.

It's called a pacifier and why would you want to take away a child's source of comfort? Children usually "wean" themselves of PACIFIERS between two and three, until then what is the problem of your child having a comfort source?
