I'm looking to buy a used car, 1996 to 2000, and I was wondering which one of these cars is better. Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfinder, Such as which engine last longer, and which car has a longer lifetime in terms of how many miles it has on it. Thank you for answering.

Personally, I'd go with the Nissan...ford people will say the explorer...depends on a persons experience with each make/model.

Owned 2 fords, both fell apart long before they should have, was always maintaining, relatives owned fords, same thing, brother works for a ford dealer and only drives them because they are demos for him...he changes demos like he changes socks and they are always in for servicing...owned 2 nissans, one a truck the other a car...absolutely no additional maintenance on either. Truck was a real work horse and motor was excellent, had over 300,000 on it.

Just bought the car last Aug and thus far it's maintenance free and we're expecting to buy a new one again this year or next...definitely a nissan. But...there are lemons in all makes so just ensure you get a good mechanic to check it over before purchasing...

I would say the nissan, or maybe look at a toyota 4runner
they seem to get better mileage than the pathfinders.

If you are considering the ford, check if it has grease fittings in the ball joints...many have been made recently without them!
so add the cost of replacing the 4 ball joints, into the price of the ford.

well honestly there both pretty good vehicals, by 96 ford had over come all the prolems the preivous models had been subject too, but the path finders are said to still be more reliable. but honestly being a current explorer owner, i would say i would lean towards the path finder
