I'm taking care of a puppy right now. But I also have 2 cats. I'm thinking of keeping the dog but right now my cats, once so sociable and free are hiding under the bed. They never do this...unless the vacuum cleaner is running, and I don't want this to become their typical behavior. How can I get them all to live under 1 roof in harmony?

Since it is a puppy, the cats will come out eventually and might even help you train the little guy: We've had a number of cat-trained dogs in my parents' household.

The biggest problem you will have is teaching the pup not to chase the cats. Tell him 'No!' when he does, and crate him if he persists. In fact, you may want to do that anyway so your kitties will come out and investigate. They will relax once they see his is not a threat.

Good luck!

You didn't say how old the cats are, but since you had them first, it'll take a while for them to get used to having the pup around. You need to keep an eye on them all when the pup is out with them. This is to protect the pup from them, and them from the pup. If the pup goes after them, they could hurt him- ie. scratch the pups eyes. The pup could get too aggressive with the cats and jump on them. Just encourage them when they are getting along and let the ones that shy away from the pup take their time to adjust to the pup. The pup will soon learn which cats want to play with him,and which ones to leave alone.

time will correct this, same thing happened when i got my new kitten, the older female cat knows that if she is going to be apart of the household she needs to be out and in sight, they now eat together even, i pick them up at the same time and they love each other
