Its usually wolves, but dogs do howl. It is usually a way of communicating with the pack to try to rally them. when a dog is left alone, sometimes they will howl and its kind of like saying "where are you? Come meet me."

Dogs and wolves howl as a way of communicating with each other and the moon has absolutely nothing with their howlings. They are looking "up" because that's the best position for their throats the produce the best "howl".

It's a legend, but I have to say, I often notice a lot of weird behaviour (including howling!) from dogs in my surgery when it's a full moon!

If there is anything in it, I can only assume dogs are affected by the lunar cycle - they say women are, like for instance we come into season (have periods) once per lunar cycle (month).

Could be true, you never know!

My dog doesn't howl but on a night of a full moon, he will sit outside and look at the moon for a long time.

Thats just a myth. I had a part wolf dog that would howl with wolves on TV and fire trucks and if we sang, but he never howled at the moon^_^

I have one that barks at the moon, she doesn't howl.
But after watching them for years when it's a full moon, I am convinced that they bark more and are more aware out there at night when they go out because it is suddenly brighter outside at night, and they are seeing different shadows than what they are used to.
