Lets say i screwed around in school all my life and didn't take anything seriously. Now I want to join the air force but have little educamacation or practical skills (such as electronics, engineering, or mechanical) and I get a p*ssy desk job. Then while in the air force I also take classes and study up on something such as mechanics, after two years can I take a test or something to prove i'm knowledgable in another area besides pushing paper and try to get a more skilled job?

Let's actually take your Question seriously for a moment.

(1) You didn't specify whether you even have a HS Diploma or a GED. The Air Force doesn't take Category IV recruits, last I remember.

(2) Most administrative positions require someone who actually has an "educamacation"[sic]. They also take up an inordinate amount of time. Many commissioned officers and other people in leadership positions spend a lot of time doing administrative work and filling staff positions, so I wouldn't be quick to judge that kind of work - if you actually value a long-term focus on career.

(3) As long as your ASVAB test scores are decent, you should be able to enlist for a technical MOS to begin with. Something like Light Wheel Mechanic doesn't need someone who scores 90+ on the ASVAB. You may be surprised to find that you actually qualify for a technical field, once you see your test results.

Bottom line, go take the ASVAB. Talk to your recruiter. See what your options are. You won't get mid-enlistment reclassification from one MOS to another (no way THAT is happening, unless you're going through something like a MedBoard), but at the end of your contract (2-6 years) you should be able to re-enlist for a different MOS.

Then again, it's the Air Force, so whatever their rules are, goes.

The AF is all about On th job training, you don't have to know EVERYTHING about a field to go into it. That's what tech school is for. Once you take a job you can't cross-train for FIVE years. Make sure you do something you really want to do. If you have such little education, what makes you think the AF would take you anyway?

Assuming that you are allowed to enter the air force, they will train you in one of many career fields. Let's say it is in the position that you consider a p*ssy desk job. You have to first get your training in that career field to the skilled, level. You start out as an apprentice, then go to the semi-skilled level and then the skilled level. There is also the technical-management level, and finally the management-supervisor level. Once you get to the skilled level, you can volunteer to cross train into another field that you are qualified for, either through testing, college courses, etc. I personally started out in Law Enforcement, then went to Base Operations, and finally a First Sergeant. Go for it.

yeah, if you get a desk job, i think you either have to be in for 2 years or maybe even a senior airman to cross-train. you'll go through tech school all over again for the job you want. if you didn't even enlist yet, i'd suggest you study hard for your ASVAB, cuz you need a high enough score to get in the air force or they'll stick you in the army or marines.

- i also don't understand why people respond to questions if they're just being smart asses. some people just wanna know answers

The best thing for you to do is stay out the military! You can get a desk job anywhere and move yourself up !!
My brother went into the navy for 4 yrs, passed with a 98 on his asvab, entered into the highest paying-hardest program, Nuclear Physics, received all these military distinguished awards, passed top of his class. 2 years after being honorably medically discharged, he cant get crap- he is working at a check cashing place ! So my advice for you is to stay out of the military!

You should be able to select a job and be trained for it
by the Air Force...Don't choose a desk job....
Choose to be a Jet Engine mechanic or Avionics mechanic
or Air Frame mechanic or Flight engineer / mechanic..
You may even be able to get into navigation or pilot
some cargo and transport aircraft..

You don't need to have skills to enter the military. They will teach you what you sign up for, and then some! Why do a desk job when there are so many other jobs in the service? There's a lot of paperwork to change your MOS in the military. Stick with what interests you and be the best at that.

If you are qualified to join the Air Force, (they test your skills and aptitudes), you will first undergo Basic Training at Lackland AFB. Upon successful completion of you basic course, you will be assigned to the Tech School for your MOS, (depending upon your initial test scores and the needs of the Air Force). Upon successful completion of Tech School, you will be sent to your first assignment, and may have the opportunity for further education. If you are dedicated and qualified based upon your performance reports, you may well have the opportunity for further education and achieve qualifications for more advanced education. It's all up to how much effort you are willing to put into your career. And if all you want to do is continue to screw around, than you won't be very successful in the Air Force or in life, but you might be qualified to be president.

Best thing to do is take the ASVAB and see what all you can qualify for. Who knows you may be able to get a practical skill, and the military will train you how to do it.
