Ok, i'm asking this question again because last time I didn't give enough information.
When my cat died he was panting and gasping for breath and he couldn't stand up. I think he was paralised. It all happened very suddenly within 10 to 30 minutes. I know it couldn't have been of old age because he was only 6 years old. It happened in my home in the very early hours of the morning. When it was happening I quickly called the vet and he said to come to the vet clinic. By the time I took my cat to the vet he was dead. Does anyone know what could have caused this? Please answer. Thankyou.

It could have been a number of things. If the cat had access to any kind of chemicals, like antifreeze, bleach, Drano, or similar related products, he could have ingested even a small amount of any of these which would have had similar results. It may have also been some kind of heart attack or stroke. Was the cat healthy otherwise? I mean did he have a shiny coat, eat well, or was he over/underweight? These characteristics would indicate that it may have been some kind of medical condition and resulted in stroke or heart attack. It may also have been that he swallowed something and got choked on it. Was there any foreign objects about the size of a large gumball or so that may have been lying around on the floor that he could have swallowed and gotten choked on? I would highly recommend contacting your local vet to see if they have any other suggestions that may be more specific to your case. Maybe they will have more answers. In the meantime, I send you my condolences for the loss of your furry loved one. You will always remember him but never be able to replace him...you may find another companion to fill the void you are feeling but it will never replace him. Good luck finding the answers to your questions.

i am so sorry that you have lost your beloved cat..its always difficult to come to terms with a loss particularly when it has happened so suddenly..
from you post i think i can read that you took the cat to the vet clinic and he died in your arms there..
Surely the vet must have given you some idea of what was wrong with him,.
No one has a crystal ball , the symptoms that you describe could be anything from cardiac arrest, to stroke, to choking on something......if you wanted to know so desperately why didn't you ask the vet to do an autopsy I am surprised that he didn't suggest one...they normally do..
I think you have to move on from thinking about why..you cannot change the past and there was nothing more that you could have done to help him at that time..you were there for him at the end..!!
remember the good times

It sounds like a heart attack as a result of a heart murmur. This is what killed my kitty last year. One minute he was fine and then all of a sudden he just started gasping and could not move - his body was rigid while this was going on. When he died, his body went limp. The attack happened suddenly - but it was over in less than 5 minutes (my cat was about 11 years old at the time). The symptoms you describe sound very similar to what my cat experienced.

There is no way to replace the unconditional love and friendship of a beloved pet. I am truly sorry to hear about your loss.

I am sorry to hear about your kitty!

When one of ours did the same thing, she was already sick. The vet was careful to say masses in her abdomen and chest, but that usually means tumors. When her back legs suddenly stopped working on that last morning of her little life and she was gasping and panting and crying- we knew it was the end for her. The vet thinks there was a blood clot that broke loose and lodged somewhere critical.

I really don't know what else to tell you.

Feel better, Friend.

My mom's cat died similarly. It was a pulmonary embolism and they can happen in very young cats very suddenly and death comes quickly, even faster than poisoning which often takes days. Paralysis and gasping are symptoms. Her cat was about 5 years old. Very possible in your case as well. Nothing can be done to prevent it. I'm sorry about the loss of your pet. Things like this are very devastating.

I am sorry I have no idea but you did the best you could do under the circumstances, you could ask the vet what he thought the cause of death was just to put your mind at rest.Try to remember the lovely times you had together and be grateful, sometimes things happen that are out of our control.

Could have been a heart attack, an allergic reaction to something or poisoned. Need to know more about what your cat was doing in the days before this attack happened. Some cats lick antifreeze because it tastes good to them but it kills them. Also, chocolate is very poisonous to cats.
So, to answer this question, it is important to know what he was doing before this happened.

So sad to lose a feline friend. Sorry to hear about your loss.

my friends cat died of the same sort of circumstances but foamed at the mouth aswell and she died of a blood clot, gasping for breath and couldn't stand! the vet should have investigated but you would of have to of asked them as they want paying for any type of medical assistance! my friend told the vet to find out so that's how he knew it was a blood clot, sounds like it could have been that with your cat! so sorry for your loss as my cats are part of my family! bless
