Are people so defensive of their beliefs, because they start to question them?

YES, I believe so. I mean, if you have enough confidence in your faith, you wouldnt have to go around preaching it and needing re-assurance from others. Doing so, it definitely stems from insecurities and doubt. The only time I think its okay to be defensive about your beliefs though is when someone chooses to make an ignorant and sarcastic comment about it to you.

I think the fundamentalist view in any religion is basically adopted so they don't have to question it. It may be more of an intellectual laziness more than an insecurity. The Ultra-orthodox Jew, or Evangelistic Christian share many of the same responses to questions as to why they believe their religion: "I've never questioned it".

Somewhat a contrarian, I think you are free to believe in whatever you feel will bring you the most happiness and make you the most enlightened person you can be. So go out there and search! Question the hell out of anything before you think it is true.

A defense of one's faith does not come from insecurity. In fact it comes from knowing the truth.

That is it! The screaming and the need for legislation to force others to be of the same faith are both born of the fear of being wrong. If you know you are right, then you have no reason to yell, threaten or try to force legislation.

For some, that may be true, but I sincerely doubt that that applies to every strong, willful, fundamentalist believer.
