The Iranians initially produced a captured GPS device as 'proof' of the British forces location. After it was pointed out that those coordinates proved that the British forces were in Iranian waters - the Iranians withdrew the GPS unit and produces a completely different set of coordinates without any explanation as to where they came from.
What do you think?

Do I think Iran made a MISTAKE ? YES !!!
Was it intentional that they seized sailors OUTSIDE of Iranian waters and claimed their were in Iranian waters? I think YES. I think they were WELL aware of what they were doing. It now costs only a few hundred dollars to buy a GPS, and I'm SURE that the Iranians had them on their patrol-boats... in FACT, you can SEE the GPS antennas on the video shown on the news.
The PROOF ? The Indian vessel has stated their GPS position when boarded by the Brits for search... and when the Brits left and were siezed... they were 1.7 miles INSIDE IRAQ. The Brits provided a picture of the helicopter GPS showing the SAME latitude/ longitude.
When the Iranians FIRST complained, they gave the EXACT SAME Lat / Long (inside IRAQ)... and then a day LATER changed their coordinates.
When I was flying in the Gulf in the 1980's, the SH-60B didn't have GPS yet... we used an inertial nav system and cross referenced with LORAN and our radar.
In September 1990 when we deployed from Japan to the Gulf... we ran to the PX in Japan and paid $2000 each for Magellan GPS our of our own pockets.
NOW EVERY bird and boat carries GPS... the Iranians were WRONG... and not just in their navigational skills.

Yes, the GPS confirms that the Brits were not in Iranian territory at the time. Matter of fact the whole thing was most likely an ambush by the Iranians.

I don't think, I know that they are mistaken. The British have submitted GPS data and satellite images to support their case. The Iranians have contradicted themselves by offering maps and coordinates that proved that the personnel were not in Iranian waters and then produced another version to cover their initial mistake.

Britain says their GPS coordinates show it was Iraqi waters. Iran is known to lie, in fact they do it quite frequently. So I don't think Iran is mistaken, I think they are outright lying.

They are not mistaken. The coordinates they gave the Brits themselves placed them well within Iraqi waters. When this was pointed out they changed them!!!
The mere fact that the rest of the world is referring to the sailors as hostages must tell you who the rest of the world believe!!

Is GPS a foreign concept for you? They were not in Iranian waters and the Iranians have a habit of kidnapping hostages.

think it's possible either way -- it's all a game on both sides
of the pond, who wants to cause an incident and whom
wants to know what the neighbors are up to ?
(few years back the US had a similar situation with the
North Koreans -- hostages were released a year later--
US was in international waters when captured. another
version of the same game)
