Religion killed the True God, and put a War "God" in Her place. You know - Joe begat Fred, Fred begat Peter, Peter begat . . . Women were literally, not counted in the old testament, just adult males which is very important for war making and government, of course. (See BIG Statue in Daniel.) Men will never admitt that they were gross sinners, although it is quite obvious if you take a quick scan of the old testament. If women weren't considered human, but were treated like cattle (merchandise), then it wasn't a crime or sin to do whatever they damn well pleased to them. Men are blind to their own iniquity. They will understand perfectly on Judgment Day. (In the end it shall speak.) Alas! That day is great, so that NONE is like it! They will eventually see the light, but then it will much to late!
I wonder what the great tribulation - such as never was - is all about? Maybe when Eve ate the () on the sixth day, she wised up, stop listening to the man and what he told her, her role was. Maybe Eve had her eyes opened, and exclaimed to the man - I'm just as good as you! Then Adam clubbed her to the ground, told everyone she had eaten from the "devils' tree, and that was that, the rest is his-story. Would that be considered a travesty? Naa, not by man.

The real travesty is religious leaders attempting to force their beliefs violently on others who have their own beliefs. This has been done throughout history by nearly every religious group. More people have died in the last 2000 years in some God's name than all the casualties of the Civil War, The American Revolution, WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam combined, and that number continues to grow.
I personally feel however, that what happened at Jonestown, then Waco, were the worst things. People are so desperate to believe in God and saviors that they'll follow anyone who sounds reasonable and believable to them.

I would have to say that it is a toss up between the Inquisition and the Burning Times, both crimes of Christianity. Most religions do not persecute and kill in the name of their god(s). That is reserved for Christianity and Islam. The Holocaust isn't a crime of Christianity's, while there have been many others, the Holocaust was caused by economic failure and the ravings of a madman who was raised Catholic but was too crazy to be labeled as anything else.

In my opinion, it has to be the Holocaust of World War II. Recently declassified British and Soviet documents have indicated the total of dead may be somewhat higher than previously believed. The following estimates provide a range of the number of victims:
An estimated 5 to 6 million Jews, including 3 million Polish Jews
1.8 – 1.9 million Christian Poles and other (non-Jewish) Poles (estimate includes civilians killed as a result of Nazi aggression and occupation but does not include the military casualties of Nazi aggression or the victims of the Soviet occupation of eastern Poland and of deportations to Central Asia and Siberia)
200,000–800,000 Roma & Sinti (Gypsies)
200,000–300,000 people with disabilities
80,000-200,000 European Freemasons
100,000 communists
10,000–25,000 homosexual men
2,500–5,000 Jehovah's Witnesses

There are worse in terms of sheer numbers, but most horrifying to me is the churches centuries long war on women which goes of to this day, but which peaked with the witch hunts, by both the Catholics and what was then their twins, the Anglicans. Numbers given range from a low of 15,000 to highs of a hundred times that with 50,000 seemingly the more standard number.
The fear and loathing of women from Paul through Benedict has led the Romn church to oppress, murder and cloister women and made the priesthood a sanctuary for closeted homosexuals and pederasts, despite both forms of sexual expression contravening the church's own doctrine. And we could spend days on the sad status of women in Islamic nations.
To me this war on women has been and continues to be religion's most despicable and dumbfounding betrayal of morality, to make our mothers and sisters spiritually defective if not demonic by the religious fiat of misogynists, eunuchs, homosexuals and pedophiles whose disdain for or at least indifference to women continues to influence religious polity and doctrinal dictates throughout Monotheism.

Man's rejection of God's truth for the lies of Satan, which led to the Fall and started this whole mess in the first place. Doesn't even matter that that's what was intended, it's still a travesty.

The crucifixion of the Jesus Christ, the Son of God was the worst travesty committed in the name of religion.
But after man and Satan had accomplished this heinous act,
God turned the tables by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the on-going work of His Holy Spirit on this earth to save sinners.

Travesty, it transpires, is a form of theatre.
I will count motion pictures among that creed, for the purposes of my argument.
My answer, after some consideration, would be Monty Python's Life of Brian.
A travesty, in the name of religion, if ever I saw one.

The Holocaust.
Adolf Hitler's war against the Jewish population was based on his understanding of his Roman Catholic faith. He felt he was doing God's work.
He also had known Heathens murdered in his camps as well as Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and political dissidents.
