It really depends on the task at hand. I am a hospital Chaplain, and so I find myself working with lots of elderly folks for whom the King James Version is near and dear to their hearts. That being said, it's really a terrible translation. When I am leading BIble study, I try to use the New Revised Standard Version. It's not as pretty, but it does get across the Greek much better than more contemporary English versions. It also has excellent footnotes.

I prefer to use a variety. I use the Living Hope Translation or the NIV for everyday reading.
I use the Living Hope because it is aeasy to read, and the NIV because that is the translation that my church uses.
For bible study I go to biblegateway.com, you can look up a passage and compare the different translations.

SkepticsAnnotatedBible.com has the best cross links in its verses. It is a great reference for people wanting to look honestly at what the Bible says.
