Well studies show that it is hereditary and that negative stimuli such as poor or inappropriate living situations and stress aggravate it.

I believe that if a person is made aware of exactly what is wrong with them and not just given pills, they can... IF THEY WANT TO... work at being healthy and managing themselves with intent to heal...

Most people with this form of the disorder actually take pleasure in their high highs and bottom out when the inevitable lows come in as a result so... It is often hard to get these people to even admit they have an actual problem because they often take great pride and pleasure in their up swings and manic episodes.

In other words, when they feel good... They imagine themselves healed and fine when they are anything but... this is where they go off their meds and act out destructively not expecing the lows that will come eventually...

Teaching someone to recognize the signs and triggers and to be honest and accountable for themselves I believe is better than medication alone.

Most people don't agree but they are in the business of turning a profit, keeping difficult people complacent and manageable and feeding the machine... I am not.

It isn't the same for everybody. It would depend on how well the person can deal with the symptoms. My brother got diagnosed with this, and he got put on Lithium. He can be kind of mean and nasty, and he has been a lot nicer since he started taking Lithium.
