I lose five points,
if you answer this question you gain two points,
if I pick best answer, I get three points,
if you get picked best answer, you get ten points.

What have you got to lose, answering this question only gains you two points,

Not to be contrary, but actually there is something to lose. Credibility.
When you ask a serious question, who are you most likely to look at for a serious answer? Would you take an answer from a responder who is level 7 but has only about 5% best answers, or a responder who is level 4 and has 50% best answers?
If you are trying to increase your credibility and your best answer rating, then you won't respond to questions unless you know the answer.
I read quite a few questions that I know the answer to but do not respond because someone else has already responded correctly. If I support their answer, I just give them a thumbs up and move on.
I am not some one who just answers to get 2 points. Anyone can do that. I try to establish a credibility so that when someone reads my answers, they understand that I know what I am talking about and take my answers more seriously.
