Banana River here in Fl.? Go to your closest tag agency and get a fishing regulation handbook (they're free at the tag agency, and other places sometimes have free ones put out by the state), some of these even have handy fish identification charts inside...

If it's a catfish, it's not that it's not edible, just that a good deal of the catfish in the IRL (Indian River Lagoon) are just plain nasty-tasting, the only thing I can think of that you can't eat through here are the puffers (saxitoxin buildup, but then again, it could just be that people aren't cleaning them right... I'm not risking it either way), but you won't catch anyone eating certain types of fish mostly because of oilyness or fishy taste.

Also, another reason to get a fish identification guide is that if FWC catches you with something you're not supposed to have either at all or at the size that you have, you can get in some pretty deep crapola. Pick up a regulation book with a fish identifier, that'll at least give you pictures of regulated species... probably no mullet or whiting or stingrays, but that's what we're talking about when we say unregulated species, after all...

Good luck, and watch for gators.
