NO WAY!
If he wants to be able to see his friends when they are talking, they can hang out at the mall. Otherwise, talking on the phone or IM is good enough.
There is son much trouble that he can get into with a webcam, don't give him the temptation! Even if you keep the webcam in the living room, where you *think* you can monitor what he is doing with it, he can always move it and put it back, or use it when you are sleeping or not in the room. He won't do it to be sneaky (I'm sure he is a great kid) but teens are impulsive, it will probably be a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Absolutely not. I watch Dateline and yes there are thousands of internet predators. Dr Phil had an episode on not too long ago about a boy who was swept up in that world. He was making TONS of money through it and one thing leading to another...but he was just a child and the money and attention just kept at him even though he knew it was wrong and wanted out. He was getting expensive gifts from his "viewers" and his parents knew nothing about it.
In this case, what benefit is there? Ok he can talk to hsi friends. Do you really need to SEE your friend to talk to them? Why can't you just type on instant messager or call each other? The few things that can fall in the "pro" category is just too outrageously outnumbered by the "con" list. I just can't see how this could possibly be necessary for school or in order to be "cool" (like many of the other things we give in to, b/c the in-crowd has it).
Many boys with webcams have also recorded their sexual experiences without the girls knowledge of it. Then when he is mad (as teens often are) it is posted on the internet which makes the girl look bad and is humiliated at school. Of course, doesn't hurt a boys rep at all but often can destroy someone else's daughter.
Webcams are just a 100% negative to me.

Where is the webcam? Is it in his bedroom? Or in the living room? I would be very hesitant to do this, there are a lot of freaky people on the internet searching for boys with webcams. Your son may be a mature and responsible boy, but the predators are conniving and manipulative.

Once your son gets a webcam, YouTube and worldwide fame (or infamy) are just a click away. If he gets the urge to post anything inappropriate on the web, just for kicks, it will haunt him in ways he may not anticipate. Prospective colleges or employers need only google his name to come across what he has posted.
If your son is mature and you trust him only to chat, then that is your judgment call. It is your responsibility to keep checking up on him, though, and to let him know the potential real world consequences of his actions if he ever chooses to abuse it.

No-not if that webcam is in his room.
If the computer is where you can monitor him while using the computer, then I would say yes, but I would make sure a parent was around to supervise. There are way too many crazy people out there willing to take advantage of kids.

These teens, I guess there's something wrong with picking up the phone and calling friends like people from my generation do.
If he wants to get a web cam, I'd keep the computer in a public place in the house, where you can monitor it. I'd also put a password on the computer. Then you can keep an eye on him while you're home, and he won't be able to use it when you're not around.

Only if your kid is older, mature and smart about it. I had a web cam when I was 15, but my dad knew I was smart enough to know what was right and wrong. ALso, my family lived far away, so we used it to communicate. If his friends live in the same area as you guys do, I wouldn't get it for him, it's a waste of money and not worth the risk.
