My dads sister turned 90 on the 4th of July last year. We didnt buy her gifts shes not much into accepting gifts as she is in giving them. My two older cousins {in their late 40s} went over did her hair and painted her toe nails then took her for a ride since she doesnt get out much. Brought her over to my fathers where we had a surprise bbq party for her. All her friends from town, church, children and my father {66} and their sister(78) set it all up and some like myself drove 4 hours just to go to the bbq for her. Just an idea get the family together for a bbq if you can she really liked it for someone so grouchy it was the first time honestly EVER she wasnt a mean old woman that everyone fears.

A t-shirt or sweater. A wal-mart gift card. A DVD box set of an old TV show like All in the family, or Andy Griffith. Some shoes.
People 85 don't usually have a lot of activities so all you really have to do is find the one thing he likes to do during the day and get him something to make it better.

The only thing that my 82 year old grandpa ever wants are cookies or books!!! REMEMBER, the older they get, the more they regress back into children.
Books help keep their mind active and is proven to help prevent alzheimers and other brain diseases. My gramps likes civil war books and "Facts" books.
the last book i got him was "Uncle John's All Purpose Bathroom Reader"!!! It has all kinds of trivia: history, science, pop trivia. Just make sure he doesnt get confused while reading it on his Lay-Z Boy and think hes in the bathroom! J/J

Spend time with him. Take him to his favourite places. Go sight-seeing with him. your time is the best gift you can give to a senior citizen who's got all the time in the world.
Unless, of course, if there's one thing that you know he loves dearly, then it's advisable that you get him that gift. But if it's too expensive, try looking for a close alternative.
