We work in a steel manufacturing plant where we work around some pretty heavy machinery. I have long hair and I have been asked to keep it either tucked under a hat or tied up and put in a bun so that it does not get entangled in anything. I have tied it up into a pony tail and tucked into the back of my shirt but I have been told that this is not acceptable due to the pony tail occasionaly getting free from this. I do not want to wear a hat nor do I want to put it in a bun. What are my options?

Get a haircut, or risk getting it caught in the machinery by the hair...You know...the policies are there for a reason...

Putting it up or cutting it off...

I have plant safety experience and I would suggest the bun if you want to keep your hair. I have seen a near-scalping when hair became caught in rotating equipment (screw conveyor). It was a totally preventable workplace accident on top of being very gory and disturbing.

it really is for your own safety, so if you don't mind losing your job, or getting your hair caught in a machine and having half your face ripped off in the process, then you should abide by the rules. and i'm absolutely not joking about the face thing. i saw a special on the discovery health channel where that happened to a little girl in india. she was EXTREMELY lucky that her mother found her face which was COMPLETELY detached from her head and brought them both to the hospital. the little girl underwent many many surgeries and needless to say, her face is not normal looking at all. so seriously, just follow the rules.

Grow up. It's just hair. I think your job is more important that your hair. I have an uncle who refuses to cut his hair (Although I'm sure you look a lot better than him.) and he gets over looked for many jobs. He looks like an idiot, his hair is nasty. But either way, I know a lot of men with long hair look pretty unacceptable (I can't say this about you, I don't know what you look like). I don't know I think you should just cut it off.

You need to know that safety comes first. Cut your hair short.

i think u should get shorter hair then. a haircut isn't nearly as bad as getting your hair ripped out in a machine!

I would braid it, pin it and keep it under your hat. It's for your own safety!
