I will be going to Carnegie Mellon for Mechanical Engineering in the fall and I dont know what kind of computer to get. I will need a laptop, but I was wondering what kinds are the best for engineering, and can hold all of the required programs.

The Timbuk2 Detour 2.0 laptop backpack earns the Student Travel Best Laptop Backpack 2005 award because it pads plus-size laptops. Because it's comfortable to haul in multiple ways. Because it has multiple personalities. Because it's rough and tough. Because somebody who's dragged a laptop around designed it: great daypack / laptop backpacks spring from those who've used them -- kudos to the Timbuk2 designers. Check it out.

Guide Review - Best Laptop Backpack 2005 - Timbuk2 Detoru 2.0 Laptop Backpack
I have two laptops. I love them both but I can't say I give them equal frequent flyer miles: my 12" iBook is a snap to pack; my 17" Powerbook is a problem child. Finding a decent laptop backpack that will coddle my biggest baby in the manner to which it should be accustomed without wrecking my back is like finding a babysitter for your kid sister on Saturday night.
Hold the phone cord -- the winner is here: Timbuk2's Detour 2.0 laptop backpack. Did I say backpack? It's so much more... stow the back straps and it's a shoulder bag. Lose the shoulder strap and it's a carry bag. No matter which incarnation you choose to use, it's a carry-on, and wide straps from all personality morphs make packing the Timbuk2 Detour around campus comfortable.

Check laptop size chart before you buy to make sure your own baby fits.

Check out a step by step guide to packing the Timbuk2 laptop backpack with the coolest travel tech gadgets.

I would recommend Dell or hewlett packard. Just get a typical 14 or 15 inch screen (not 17, theyre a bit heavy) with about 80gb hard drive (plenty of space for your programs), 1gb RAM, and a Pentium mobile processor (so that it is wireless -- CMU has a wireless network everywhere on campus).
One thing I would STRONGLY recommend is to buy your laptop before you start school because the best back to school sales are in the July/August time frame. Also, DO NOT buy a computer from a campus bookstore or you will pay at least $500 too much for a computer you can order cheaper online.

dell

It depends on your needs and income. So, lets get number crunching (no pun intended).

If your on a budget, I would get a standard Dell inspiron notebook with a 14" screen. (thats as small as they go.) You will want to stick with dell because they are the best computers and dont crash unless you abuse them.

If you have a bit larger a budget, you should invest in dell inspiron with a 1 or 2gig ram card. This should help with your design programs, the best vid/graphics card, and 2 250 gig external hard drives. This is the best set for what you will be getting into.

If you have money and arnt worried about anything, a Dell XMS with full settings would be awesome, I can only look and drool at that computer though.
