It's saying to look at the bigger picture! Sometimes we get so focused on the smalled details that we forget that there is a bigger focus to remember!

it's sayin look at the whole picture other than just one thing. For people that means that there is more than just one good thing about a group. A forest has many other good things other than the trees therefore you should try to look for other details other than looking at the most obvious or looking at the stuff that YOU WANT TO SEE

Never heard this. The quote I know is:"He can't see the forest from the trees" which means the person is one dimensional in his thinking.

I really think you misquoted. I think its more like you can't see the forest for the trees. It means you simply have tunnel vision and maybe only looking at things one way. You should expand your mind and become a little more open minded that's all.

it's "you can't see the forest for the trees" and means you can't pay too much attention to the details without seeing the whole picture

I think there is something wrong with the "than" there.
But, I think it means don't be too narrow minded and try to look at the whole picture of things.
