Poodles are expensive both to purchase and maintain. A poodle must be groomed every 4-6 weeks. Depending on your area, that can be anywhere from $50-$100 or more per visit. You can't 'not' groom them, the will mat up and be ugly and uncomfortable, and in most cities that qualifies as neglect or cruelty, which you can be arrested for. Standards usually live up to about 12 years. They have very good temperments and are much calmer and less nippy than the toy or miniatures. They are also very intelligent and trainable. I would guess a standard poodle from a good breeder will be in the $500-$1,000 range, but I've never tried to buy one so I'm not 100% sure on that. NEVER buy from a petstore! Those dogs a bred in filthy cages and come with all sorts of diseases and birth defects. Find a reputable private breeder in your area. A breeder should be willing to show you where she keeps her dogs, let you meet the parents and hand-pick your pup from the ones she has available, should offer vet certification for eyes, ears, hips, heart, etc. for both the parents and pups, offer health guarantees on the pup, give you the pups pedigree, etc.
Overall they are good dogs, but you can't underestimate the grooming requirements. You will have to brush him/her daily and groom professionally every 4-6 weeks. The only way to stretch it longer is to have her shaved short all over all the time to prevent matting, but they aren't very pretty shaved. I'm a groomer and I HATE seeing matted poodles come in just because owners didn't consider the time and cost of grooming when they bought them- please do your homework! Your poodle will thank you.

Standard poodle are fantastic animals. IWouldnt be my first choice but hey, not ev everyone loves my slobbery mastiffs. Poodles live to be about 12-14yrs i believe and the price varies on the breeder. Keep in mind if u find a dog that costs alot less its probably not a pure bred and doesnt come from a reputable breeder. I always tellpeople to ask lots of questions to the breeder and go see the facilty, this way u can meet the parents. S Poodles are very active, they are a working dog! They r very smart and loving to their family, just dont give him or her thta aweful show clip,,,lol

unbelievably smart, independent thinkers. very loyal, and will protect you. my most recent standard passed away at 15 years old. he worked with me at a senior's home, and learned how to ride the elevator on his own - he would 'request' people push the buttons though. he ended up training all the seniors and 1/2 the staff to do his bidding. they are very althletic, and don't be scared away by the grooming. i kept my guy cut short, except in winter. nobody thought he was ugly - most people thought he was a curly-coated retreiver. I invested in a good set of clippers, and cut him myself. a couple hours work - but a small price to pay to have a non-shedding, non-smelly fabulous dog! good with children, good with other animals - just socialize from the start, and remember who is boss - because they are smart enough to work you! my tough-guy boyfriend laughed that i was getting a poodle and said he would never be seen in public with it - his tune really changed - now he recommends standards to EVERYBODY, and this is a guy who bred german shepherds. there is a breed out there for everyone, and i love all dogs, but some dogs are more people than dog and i believe standard poodles are one of these. expect to pay a minimum of $600, but really a good one from a reputable breeder will be approx. $1000

My sis has a standard, it is the greatest dog. They love to show off (work), training is a must, takes lots of time for grooming. They are very loyal and require a lot of socializing. I would suggest being careful of your breeder. Ask lots of questions, ask for the pedigree, go visit before purchasing.
