Other than the stuff you NEED, tickets, passport, etc. (which should be in a money belt under your clothes), travel as light as possible so you'll get around easily.

If you have nothing to do with the planning and execution of the journey itself, then I would say you need some ways to amuse yourself for the trip.
Try an MP3 player that runs on ordinary batteries, and take along a good amount of batteries for it.
Also try recording your impressions of the trip with a log or journal.

Well, money, since you can buy the other things with it. Except a passport....

toothbrush, tooth paste and soap to wash you face with plus sunscreen and moisturiser.
paper and pen
book, suduko
peanuts (protein) and water
money (coins too) (Eros)
tissue
nasal spray (saline)
cell phone for text messaging
socks in case your feet get cold and a shawl to use as a pillow or blanket or curtain.
