There is no significant benefit to purchasing Windows Vista and from what I've been reading it is far more trouble than it is worth.

You can still validate your copy of XP without spending a cent....or a euro in your case. Simply go online and try the standard method of activating the software. It will tell you that it is unable to verify your copy and will prompt you to do so by telephone. Call the number. The operator on the other end will ask you if this is the only computer the software is installed on, in which case you should answer, "yes".
The operator will then give you the verification code to type into the fields on your computer and Windows XP will be activated with no problems. Afterward, you may use Windows Update to download and install updates and security patches. Be prepared to install a lot of patches.

Enjoy.

First off, if you are happy with XP. I would continue to run this os. From all that I have learned about Vista its really noth more than a very expensive XP upgrade, not only that but to run vista you require a very good comp with a high end graphics card to run all the fancy graphics and widgets and so on. I did the test provided by the people Cnet.Downloads.com. and although my cp is of quite good quality, it told me that i would need to upgrade my cpu and graphics card to run anything over the home version. so I would validate my XP if I were you and save my self a ton on up grades to your pc to run a system with more bugs than an old dog. Microsoft will probably be providing updates for XP for a few more years 5 at least. Also with Vista on the market it should bring down the price of XP pro sp2 build 2600. Which I have seen in Canada for as low as 110 dollers Can. Or you could go to a bit torrent site and get a validation patch for free! good stuff. So there are some options for you have a good day .

141 Euros sounds very expensive for the XP Home Upgrade.

Did you price the full version instead?

Get the XP Home Upgrade (< $120 Canadian) and have an old Windows 98 or 95 CD ready to confirm the upgrade during the install.

Avoid Vista until you buy a PC with it included.

if you don't use Internet banking or any Internet shopping don't bother validating. If you do then consider the cost difference because you can get a new PC even the very basic one for around €400-€500. Your current computer is probably old now and investing €140 on it and possibly more in the near future is not recommended. Vista on your current PC won't work well because it will be very slow and you won't enjoy all the "wow" windows advertises.

I dont know where you got the price from - you can buy a copy legitimately for much less than that.

Vista - its to early to buy - in my opinion it needs at least another year to get all its bugs sorted and other programs working properly with it.

If you mean your windows failed the validation procedure when doing a Microsoft download then you have pirate windows. I would buy a genuine licensed copy and start your computer from scratch. If you dont then you can no longer get windows updates or download any of the add-on software from Microsoft.

It depends what you use your computer for, generally. Check out the price of Windows *Vista*. If you just use your computer for general stuff - office applications, web browsing etc, then go for Vista if it's not a lot more expensive.

However, if you have, for example, external hardware (printers, scanners, cameras, etc) that you need to use, check that the manufacturers have released drivers for Windows Vista before you go down that route.
