I know that the trigger voltage of the flash will possibly damage my camera, and using the transmitter on my hot shoe will be fine as that is what they are designed for - but will the voltage on the flash damage the trigger on the reciever? I am looking at purchasing an old set of bowens studio flash and using my trusty old flashgun off camera with my new nikon d40

Yeah, if you fire it straight at it.

If the seat fits, then the flash signal should be fine. I do believe that it's simply a switch, rather than a voltage signal, but I could be wrong. I've had hot-shoes on cameras which did not take any batteries. So when you take a picture, there's a resistance change in between the two contacts on the hot shoe.
