And if so, why do people spend so much money on teeth-whitening products when they could get a tub of baking soda for around 50p? Also, is it safe to use in this way?

Thanks for all your answers so far!

It does and it is safe to use - just rinse well. After all, baking soda is used in baking!
It's our "use no initiative" society, we prefer to have someone hand us a ready-made product.

Yes, bicarbonate of soda does work.

BUT baking powder is a mix of bicarbonate of soda & tartaric acid so make sure you buy bicarbonate of soda and NOT BAKING POWDER. Acid is not good for your teeth.

You only need to use the bicarb once or twice a week. Make sure you rinse well and don't swallow it.

People buy other products because 1. they believe the marketing propoganda and 2. there seems to be a belief that the more something costs the more effective it must be.

I always have used it every day have done for years, my dentist was surprised as I've never had to have them cleaned there. My parents used it many many years ago as then there wasn't much toothpaste available. You can pay lots of money for the toothpaste that is supposed to whiten only some of them contain bicarb besides all the chemicals, save your money and use the bicarb.

Yes, you can use baking soda to take stains off your teeth but you have to be very careful. To do this, you need 1/4 cup of water and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda powder (Arm & Hammer is the best and most popular).

Take your 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and drop it into the 1/4 cup of water and stir it. First, the water will look cloudy but it should turn clear when the baking soda dissolves. You MUST wait until the baking soda is dissolved 100% before you do anything else with it!

Now you can get your toothbrush and put some toothpaste on it. Make sure your toothbrush has been rinsed well. Either dip your toothbrush w/toothpaste in the 1/4 cup of water and baking soda or brush your teeth (with regular toothpaste) and then gargle the 1/4 cup of water and baking soda. DO NOT SWALLOW. You shouldn't have to do this everyday.

Or you can just use baking powder paste instead of toothpaste or baking soda, if you have it. Here are other things to try that may be easier:

a) Take some strawberries and slice them in half. Using the inside of the strawberries, rub them on your teeth, rinse, and brush.

b) Get exactly 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide and gurgle it like mouthwash. Hydrogen peroxide is basically harmless. It's mostly made of water and is really called H202. You can also mix with toothpaste. Don't swallow.

c) An old-fashioned way is to rub the inside of an orange peel on your teeth. It whitens teeth the same way strawberries do, since both it and strawberries have a lot of Vitamin C.

d) Get a 1 cup size measuring cup filled with water. Add 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 dash of salt, and 2-3 drops of vinegar (add the vinegar after the baking soda has dissolved). The mixture should foam. Dip a toothbrush into the paste and brush onto teeth. Do not swallow.

e) The last thing is to get 100% Apple Cider Vinegar and put that on your teeth. It may take a while longer, though, but it's safe and sanitary.

Those are the most popular things I've found. The only one I've actually tried is the anwer and the letter "d." Those two work really well, but you shouldn't do it every single day, because the baking soda could burn your teeth enamel and gum line because of the acid.
