im not that computer savy and i find linux somewhat difficult to use. it took me 2 hours to find out how to connect my printer via network and i still can't get my sound card to work. if i just use my computer for email, it will be great because it's free and i can run linux on my old pc. a lot of software are free. free office suite, free drawing program...u name it. there are some hurdles u need to get pass and once u get used to it, im sure it's sweet.
it's free so i can't complain.
give it a chance. u might like it. don't give up too quickly tho :D

Dear Friend,
Linux is great. It has these advantages:
User Friendly
Open Source
Free
Almost Virus free
So get it. No problem. Download it here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/
Moreover you can use Linux along with Windows. You can switch between the two. You can have the juice of the two.
But ask a computer professional preferably an RHCE to install and teach you for the first time.
Trust me...
I bet that it is surely more user friendly than Windows.
Thank You...

Well Ash, The only person that can really answer your question is you. I suggest you try out some live CDs for yourself. Try it this way. Go to www.livecdlist.com. Start with Puppy Linux, it's small easy OS that works on almost anything. Then try Slax, a little different and bigger. Like the look of Mac, then try Dream linux. If you find you can handel them then go on to PClinuxOS and finally Ubuntu. If your computer is a couple years old and you connect to the internet with a DSL or Cable line you shouldn't have any problems with drivers. There are a bunch more distros that you can try, If you find one you really like then click the install icon and follow directions to install to your hard drive. Have fun and enjoy the adventure.

Linux is not that difficult as people say. Technology is changing.. people needs are changing. Linux has been equally well developed with Windows in recent days. Check out Suse Linux 10 for Desktop, Fedora Linux, Red Hat Linux 4 for Desktops... All these are User Friendly and can be used as easy as windows.

If you aren't too computer savvy, you may want to avoid it. The linux versions are getting closer and closer to windows level compatibility and usability but they aren't there yet. Installing up to date hardware 'drivers', particularly video cards and printers, can be rough. Software doesn't always work out of the box either.
If you want to give it a go, I would choose ubuntu linux, it handles itself well through the install and is kinda user friendly. Last i checked it was free. You can also get a live version on cd and run it that way to make sure your hardware will mesh.

Linux is not really the best OS for a standard home type users. You would really need to want to learn more in order to support it and do simple stuff on it. Also the software available for Linux is no where near as prolific as it is for Windows. 90% of the world's computers use windows so most software is written for windows. Windows has plug and play and other automated elements that Linux does not have. Finally if you like to play games on occasion then forget Linux it is not for you. If yo want to learn about computing and networking and security and maybe you want to learn a computer programming language like C++ then go for Linux. Hope this helps.

My experience says LINUX is best but only for computer professionals.
For other users who are not from computer field, should better opt for other OS like Windows or Mac, which are user friendly.
Linux is good for them who have enough knowledge about computer, since there are lot of commands which are needed to be remembered. And if u are not a computer/IT professional, it becomes tough to remember all such commands and all.
And yes, you can try LINUX without Installing it on ur drive by using "LIVE CD / DVD".
But if u are computer / IT professional, I would suggest u to opt for LINUX.
Best of Luck.

Try Kubuntu, it's free and fairly easy to learn and use.
Run as "LIVE CD" to see if you like it AND it works with all your hardware, then install as Dual Boot with Windoze.
