I'm not American, I'm Canadian but do you mean a bread stick?They used to be served in some restaurants as a sort of appetizer, but prices going up on everything as they have been doing, I think they've mostly been eliminated. You can still buy them in grocery stores.I often buy the soft bread sticks to serve with spaghetti, but we still eat with silver ware though.

Well, it may be a good idea for some foods, but I wouldn't want to eat cake or pie with a bread rod.
